He could be a grump. She wouldn't care in the end. Watching him, she let out an annoyed snarl. "Show off!" He was taller than her, so of course any drop he did was going to be a short one. Thinking it over carefully, she nodded. "Okay." And with that, she pushed off from the side, letting go and falling through the air. If Nec didn't catch her, she was totally taking a chunk out of his butt for it. Hard as rock or not. Her body naturally started to twist, trying to get her feet up under her. Just in case.
"always" Nec teased and prepared to grab her. She wasn't a small house cat! He'd do his best either way, and when she jumped he caught her under her 'arms', a small 'oof' escaping and he had to take a step back to keep his balance, but she was safely down. "Heavy cat. Can't pumas jump several meters if they want?"
"I don't know if you heard me coming in, but those rocks are damn sharp. Like hell was I jumping down onto them from a height that is great than I am tall in human form." She looked up at him, the bit of loose skin around her neck all bunched up. "I don't know about you, but i like not limping around." When he released her, she would gingerly pick her way back to her clothing. Shifting back into human form, she cursed as she found a sharp rock.
"Point is proven." Wiggling back into her clothing, she slipped her shoes on. "Okay. I'm ready." Picking her way carefully back, she tried to keep the cursing to a minimum. Flats really weren't the best option when it came to rocky surfaces. She would swear she felt every sharp pointy rock go into her arch. "Did you want to grab anything on the way back? I have access to the kitchen and I know where there is some chocolate cake about to be thrown out in the morning."
"Oh come on, you're not three meters tall." Deliberately misunderstanding he grinned, Jasper was good at distracting him apparently. "And I did. Some creative wording, are you still gonna kick me in the shins?"
Nec was less careful with where he placed his feet. Stone skin and a lifetime of walking barefoot gave him plenty of tolerance for sharp things. Jasper didn't obviously, so after five curses Nec figured he might as well pick her up and save her the pain. He'd put her back down once they reached the sand.
"Cake sounds nice. You're allowed to help yourself?" If not he'd just leave some coins, just take a guess at the price.
"Yes. When you least expect it since you know about it." And once she actually get some good shoes to do so. Before she knew it though, she found herself in Nec's arms, feet off the rocks. Her body instantly relaxed against his, muscle memory taking over. It wasn't like he was about to dunk her someplace. He wouldn't get his cake otherwise.
"Yes. If it is about to go bad anyway, I can totally have some before it is tossed. Anyone is. Lasagna hates food wastes and anything that can lessen it, he will do." Including giving the food to the employees or away to people as they left the restaurant. Usually it was mostly desserts as they were a bit harder to control on quantity, but there were also vegetables most nights and sometimes some meat. It really all depended upon so many factors that Jasper didn't know how he did it. "So no need to worry about anything."
"Didn't expect anything less. Pointy shoes too i guess?" Riiiight. Nec wasn't too worried. Thus was Jasper, she might do it only to prove a point, but Nec didn't think she reeeeally would. Maybe a token kick.
Oh, well that was interesting, she instantly went all liquid and relaxed. Huh, he'd expected something more tense fter the tomato soup river. But maybe it was just the escape from the sharp rocks.
"Ah, fair. Yeah food waste is--" Wow, smooth, waste is a waste, hm? He was shrp tonight... "Anyway, I'm all for pilfering cake!" Aaah. Sand under his feet. Nec could handle sharp rocks but it was much better walking on sand no matter how strong the bottom of his feet was. A few meters extra to get out all the way, Nec put down Jasper carefully.
"Oh. The pointiest one I can find. Only the best for you Nec." Laughing, she sighed as she felt the sand beneath her feet. And immediately in her shoes. But she would take soft sand over hard rocks anyway. "I was hoping you would say that! So come on!" Reaching out, she grabbed his hand and started tugging on him, laughing as she did so. Nec could totally out walk her, but for now, she was in the lead and was going to take advantage of it.
Nec let her pull him along across the sand, not minding being lead. But the feeling of being watched returned again on the open beach, but again it was nothing specific so he tried to ignore it, push it down so he didn't spiral again. Jasper had turned his mood incredibly fast and no way was he losing that.
It took a little while, walking back to town, but they chatted a bit about mundane stuff and soon enough the edge of the village was in sight.
A moment he chuckled at Apo's mental nod at Jasper's effect. Told you. "Yeah yeah I know, now go to sleep og go watch the stars, oh wise dragon." Rolling his eyes he did feel better, managing to push the feelings down.
Jasper was enjoying this walk. The cool night air. Being with a friend. Going on a food raid. It was all nice. Walking the streets, she took shortcuts whenever she could. Leading him through the shorter side streets and alleys. Soon, she could see the back door of the restaurant off in the distance. "So do you want to just take the whole cake back to your room or what?" Letting go of his hand, she went to go pick the lock on the door. She liked to keep her skills sharp and still did this, despite having a key.
It took a moment for nec to register her question. He was distracted, the sensation of being watched had tripled after they got into the village and between the buildings, and when she stopped by the door...
"Hm? Oh um, sure." He gave her a glance but was looking around for- well, anything. This wasn't just his normal paranoia, damnit!
As Jasper picked the lock (didn't she work here? Shouldn't she have a key?) Nec kept a careful watch. She was allowed so they weren't doing anything wrong, but he felt... itchy.
"Should've known, a no-good thief." a gravelly voice from the shadows around a corner rasped at them.
Jasper barked out a laugh as she glanced towards the swords, eyes ringed in blue. "Yep. That's me." Reaching into her pocket, she pulled out a key. "A thief with a key. Ever heard of practice? I like to keep my skills sharp." Opening the door, she gestured inside. "Did you want any food or anything?" Jasper wasn't thinking anything of it. Just a person down on their luck and she already knew that Lasagna didn't care if people like him ate the food there.
Glancing at Nec, she tilted her head. "Hey...Rocky?" Reaching out, she tapped his arm. "You okay?"
He'd never heard the voice before, at least not that he remembered, but it still sent a chill down Nec's spine and a very clear NO into his mind as he twitched with the urge to escape! Jasper's tap barely registered but it reminded him he wasn't alone here, and whoever this was had to not get near his friend.
Turning, Nec growled but it soon cut off. Out stepped someone disconcertingly similar to him, only larger, broader, with horns like a mix between a ram and a stag; the curl of the ram and the spikes of the stag.
"I wasn't talking to you, feline."
Nope! Nec was definitely not fine, he was staring at someone he knew who was but refused to accept. It couldn't be! Not here, how the hell...?
"Well, I don't know who else you will be talking to." She looked between Nec and this new comer. Tugging his arm, she tried to push him towards the door. "I know you can read Rocky. Find the chocolate cake with today's date on it. Don't worry okay. It will be okay." She would give him a reassuring smile. "Decide how much you want to take and then bring it back out okay?" She was trying to get him out of the situation. Once that wannabe Nec revealed himself, Nec hadn't...Yeah. Nope. Different problem.
"Now do you want something to eat or not? Cause my patient is gonna wear thin with you." She turned around, hands on her hips. "I ain't scared of you so don't even try it." And Jasper truly wasn't. She had faced down worst foes. She could face down this.
Yeah, nope, Jasper stood no chance at shoving Nec in the door. He was well and truly stuck, staring at the other and still refusing to accept someone from there had followed him here.
Then Jasper spoke.
"Jasper..." Nec did take a step, but ut was between her and the other changeling instead of to the door. The other sneered at Jasper's offer of food, giving her a once-over glance before dismissing her. She was small, weak, not worth his time.
"At least I expected you to have the self respect to choose proper partners, but you're even more pathetic than I thought, Necthan."
Nec glared back in return, baring his teeth. "You got no right. Go away. F*uck off, cacan."
A low growl built up in her throat as she peered around Nec. Hands clenched into fists as she stared him down. "We aren't partners you asshole. We are friends. Gods. Can't even tell the difference. Nec who is this poor imitation?" Her lips were pulled back into a snarl. She was really regretting changing back into her human form now. But if need be, she could fit in this outfit at least. It wasn't like she was wearing layers of clothing that would actually prevent her from doing anything. "And do I need to get out that super high power flashlight or the blacklight?"
