Nec was wandering the high-tide mark along the beach, poking through driftwood. Friz was somewhere off in the shrubs and bushes hunting, and Bit the giant bat-familiar was swinging from his right horn, apparently having a blast. It was breezy and not all that warm with winter approaching, but after the recent storm it was the perfect time to go picking. He needed a few thing for the weyr that still looked pretty sparse, and the changeling wanted to make something himself.
Unfortunately for Nec, the peace wouldn't last long.
Dec wasn't looking where they were going, glancing behind them fearfully with one hand covering the place where their eye used to be. They didn't know what had happened - one minute they were in the school with the teacher looming above them and the next they'd found themself on a sandy beach. How they'd gotten here they didn't know, but they did know to run as fast and as far away as they could. This resulted in them smacking straight into Nec and falling back onto the sand. They hastily scooted away from him, visibly trembling.
Dec fall backwards and Nec stumbled forwards, but managed to keep his balance. Bit took off and flapped herself into the trees, hiding and maybe finding a fruit! Fruits, yes!
"What the-." Turning, Nec half expected Kemori, or maybe Taki though she weighed next to nothing, but he definitely didn't expect a completely unfamiliar face. It was a beach, it wasn't even hilly, though to be fair he'd been behind that slight turn in the breakline of the waves...
"Uh. You alright?"
Dec would be faced with a curious blue face and a hand offered to pull him up, inch-long tusks and jagged horns. The rest of Nec was blue too, aside from a red shirt and green kilt, his feet bare and sporting talons since no shoes ever was okay with talons.
The kid flinched and immediately scooted further back, managing to get their feet under them again. Their hand was still covering their eye but a trickle of blood was oozing down from their palm. Frantically, they looked around for a weapon though the only things around them were shells and rocks. So they picked up a rock with their other hand, though it was heavy in their palm. "S-Stay away from me!" They didn't want to lose their other eye, unless this strange blue person had more nefarious plans in mind. One could never tell with adults, though it looked like this one had managed to keep his face somehow. How he'd managed that was something they didn't know, unless they'd somehow managed to get from the school to near the forest without noticing?
Okay yeah, nope, getting closer was probably not a smart thing right now. Instead Nec sat down in a crouch, less threatening than a 6'8" troll standing over them.
"So that's a no, I won't be leaving but I won't get closer either." He'd been able to tell the kid was hurt even without seeing the blood, the scent carrying easily on the slight breeze. He eyed the stone with a glance but ignored it. This close it might do some damage, but aiming with one eye and on the ground like that, Nec didn't think it posed much of a threat. "And you're hurt. You just artived?" The irony didn't escape him, aside from the place this wasn't far from Nec's own experience when he arrived here! Heh.
Dec didn't answer, only clutching the stone tighter when Nec crouched down. At first they thought he might have been gearing up to pounce and rip them to pieces, but as precious moments passed without any sudden movements they went from terrified to...well, confused. Why wasn't he attacking them? Everyone else did, even the ones that they thought had been too small to kill them.
They'd been so, so wrong.
"Why aren't you trying to hurt me?" they blurted out, their good eye narrowed. Maybe he was trying to lull them into a false sense of security? That had to be it, there was no way he actually had good intentions. Never trust anyone bigger than you, that was how Dec had managed to survive this long.
Nec watched their face, but still caught the small changes. For a mo e t he thought the stone would come flying, but then-
He laughed!
"Holy shit, I basically asked the same thing when I arrived here. So my guess is yeah, you're not where you think you are. Wherever that is. This is a whole other planet. And whoever did that to you, there's a bigger chance of the sea turning to jello than them being here." Even more remote actually, considering it wasn't too long since the IF actually did that. And maybe answer the kid properly too. "And I'm not gonna hurt you. Or attack you or whatever because I don't want to. But I would like to ha e a look at that, and then get you butt to the infirmary." Before he could really think about it probably being a bad idea, Nec took a crouched 'step' forward and gestured at the eye.
His reply just resulted in them being more confused. Another planet? But how? It didn't look too different from the place they had come from... Well, scratch that. The sky was blue and there was no heavy fog hanging over their head. Even the sun was out. Dec wasn't sure if they'd ever even seen the sun before now, not that they'd lived for very long but still...
A moment passed before they slowly removed their hand from their eye, or lack thereof considering there was nothing there but an empty socket that was sluggishly bleeding as though said eye had been removed not too long ago. Their hand was sticky with the stuff, making Dec grimace slightly and try to wipe it on their grimy oversized sweater. When Nec moved forward though, they moved back. It was clear that they still didn't trust him, but he was able to look at their injury.
A sudden stop, Nec visibly caught himself mid-'step', grimacing. "Sorry. But that looks bad, you definitely need to see doctor." Hopefully not Larandaithiel, the guy would probably scare the kid right back where he came from.
Hmm...
"You afraid of horses?" 'Starmane' wouldn't tell the kid squat, but Breyze was close enough, even if she'd scoff at being called a horse.
"What's a...horse?" Dec asked nervously, wondering if it was some kind of monster. Maybe it had multiple mouths and sharp teeth and acidic saliva to dissolve flesh and even bone... They shivered and tried to shake the image from their mind. Maybe the 'horse' wouldn't look at all terrifying and they were just letting their imagination get away from them. The rats they'd glimpsed in the city weren't bad, after all...
Nec blanched. "You don't know what a horse is?" But given a moment's thought there was no reason to. More than likely this one wasn't from earth, so why should they know a horse from any other animal? "Uuh... Largish animal on hour legs.." he gave another few descriptions of a horse, but Breyze was soon here anyway, so...
She'd taken the shortest way through the woods, cutting a good chuck of time from a walk from the Weyr, but she slowed down before she emerged, alerted by her Bonded that this one was skittish. Then out from between the trees emerged a Starmane, her colors the upside-down of dawn; golden head running through orange and red to the darkest violet at her hooves. She walked slowly in an arch around the two, dipping her head as she approached but would stop if they flinched.
"That's Breyze, she's not a horse but she's built like one." Nec gave a shrug, it didn't actually matter. "She'll give you a ride into town if you need it?" Highly doubtful they'd let Nec help after all. "Oh, and I'm Nec, by the way."
Dec frowned, wondering why it seemed so unusual that they didn't know what a horse was. Animals were rare in the city, and though they'd seen the occasional graffitied animal on the wall and toy animals such as a small wooden yellow thing called a 'duck' the only animals they were really familiar with were rats. They tensed upon Nec mentioning that a horse was a large animal, but relaxed slightly upon learning that they tended to eat plants and not people. That didn't mean they were wholly prepared for Breyze though, flinching back. They took another step back from Breyze, glancing briefly to Nec when he spoke. "Dec," they answered after a moment of hesitation, their good eye moving between Breyze and Nec in case either of them decided to make any sudden movements.
When there were none forthcoming and with their gaze still trained on Nec, Dec hesitantly reached out to Breyze - not quite touching her, but not sure how they were going to be able to get on her back without hurting her somehow. She was big, and they were very small. On the bright side, they definitely didn't weigh much with their practically being skin and bones.
"Dec? Nice to meet you." Could be better circumstances, and Nec resisted making a quip about names. Yet. For now he'd let them get comfortable with Breyze, and Nec sat back to watch.
Once Dec reached out for her, Breyze laid down in a fluent move before stretching her neck to maybe nuzzle his hand. She didn't say anything of course, but watched Dec with clearly more behind her eyes than a simple animal.
"She'll carry you if you want, no problem." Nec wanted to get going, there was no saving their eye, but it had to hurt, and getting someone professional to look at it should be sooner rather than later...
Though they flinched slightly at the feeling of being nuzzled, Dec eventually seemed to accept that she wasn't going to bite their hand off and slowly, cautiously petted her. If it really was okay with her then maybe...? They looked at her back and then at her again, but not seeing any anger in her gaze decided to take the risk as they moved towards her side to climb up onto her back.
Instead of grabbing her mane, they leaned forward to wrap their arms around her neck even though they couldn't quite get their arms all the way around so their grip was shaky at best. Hopefully she didn't suddenly decide to throw them off.
Nec just watched, he knew well that Breyze would be gentle, and was part amused and part knew exactly what Dec was going through right now. It was barely over a year since Nec had been in the same situation after all.
Seemingly too gently for a creature her size, Breyze stood to her feet, it did t start walking. She'd wait for Dec to be comfortable before moving, even if Nec told her too (though he didn't).
"You ready?" He looked to Dec, a raised eyebrow in question, and if he confirmed the Starmane would head off, Nec walking beside them and easily keeping up.
