Nec was glad they got help fast. Not that he'd doubted it, the people at the infirmary were pros, and he was glad Dec hadn't bailed. It was a nasty wound, and Nec was still furious that a teacher, or anyone, could to it to a kid! But she wasn't there, so he'd have to forget about it for now.
"Feeling better?" Breyze was still outside too, patient as ever, even if she might not be needed for a ride. "I'm guessing you don't have a place to stay." It was as much a question as an assumption.
Though Dec knew better than to mess with the bandages that now covered their injury, they very much wished they could scratch at it because the medicine that had been used itched and stung. Hopefully if they continued to ignore it the feeling would go away eventually. In response to Nec's question, they nodded slightly. "The pain's gone. It just itches," they answered softly. "Will I have to wear these forever?" They motioned to the bandages. "Because I really don't want to..." Surely there had to be something more comfortable to wear while keeping the socket clear of debris. When asked whether they had a place to stay, they shrugged and shook their head. "I'll find something. Like those big metal boxes that food is thrown away in."
"Nah. Just until it heals. Then you can get a patch, or a glass eye like they suggested." There were probably other things too, but Nec didn't have any experience in that field.
Without really considering it, Nec headed towards his own weyr, but the smell of food had him diverting to the cantine. "Hungry? And you can stay with me if you want." Should be easy enough to make a bunk for them, or Nec could just take the chair. Maybe Haven had some kind of program for new arrivals too, but he hadn't thought of checking that. Nec had been lucky and met Raf who'd helped him right after arrival, and now was the chance to give it forward.
"I'd rather not have a glass eye," Dec mumbled, frowning. "It wouldn't serve any real purpose anyway, and if it breaks while still in my socket then I'll just have to get treated all over again." That and they really didn't want to put anything in there again - having the scalpel forced in and carving out their eye was still too fresh in their memory. Maybe a patch wouldn't be so bad, though?
At the offering of being able to stay with Nec, Dec froze for a moment. "Stay? With you? Why? Is there something you want from me?" Old habits were hard to break and Dec probably wouldn't believe him if he said there was no catch even though Nec had stayed with them while they were in the hospital.
"Good points. Lot of hassle for no reason." Kid had sense, Nec wouldn't want a glass eye either. "And I don't want anything from you, it's just an offer." He shrugged. "But I'm not letting you live in a container. I think the weyr might have something else, or the village maybe, there's at least one inn if you prefer that. But my place is near, and I got the space." As for his growing menagerie of Bondeds, they'd just have to figure that out in case Dec was afraid of canines or sharpblades or what have you.
In the cantine there were plenty of space, it wasn't at any of the main meal times but there were always something to eat, even if it wasn't the full selection. He guided Dec to a table near the food and gestured that he should sit.
Dec hesitated, wondering why the other would want them to stay with them for seemingly no reason. But then again it wasn't like they had anywhere else to go and if they had the chance they would prefer safety and shelter over having to live on the streets again, scrounging for scraps and hoping against hope that they lived to see another day. "I guess... If you really don't mind," they finally agreed. The delicious smell of food quickly attracted their attention though, and they noticeably perked up. "I don't really know. What would you suggest?" It wasn't like they could read the menu, not when they'd been more focused on survival than anything else. They would just have to trust Nec's insight on the food here, that he wouldn't pick something that would be too much for their fragile stomach.
"Wouldn't have offered if I did. But if you'd rather have a place by yourself it shouldn't be a problem to get a long-term room at the inn." Nec easily recognized the suspicion and uncertainty. He'd been there several times, both before and after leaving the Order and become somewhat of a hermit for many years because of it. Nec hoped Dec would escape that. Grinning at the kid when they perked up at the scent of food, Nec gestured that they should go have a look.
"It's not the full selection now, still a few hours until dinner, but there's always something." The spread was mostly fruits of all kinds, guaranteed at least a few Dec had never seen. Some meats, like bacon and cold cuts for bread, and buns. "Not sure what you like, but I've found almost everything tastes good." More or less. There were a few things Nec steered clear of, but t that was personal taste, as probably 70% of the diners usually took some kind of salad.
Dec nodded and moved closer, only to be grabbed on the shoulder rather roughly by a hand possessing manicured nails. "Excuse me, what are you doing here? Don't you know that this place is solely for respectable people?" the woman huffed, her grip on Dec's shoulder tightening as they tried to wriggle out of her hold. "S-Stop, you're hurting me," the child whimpered out. In response to their plea, the woman simply scoffed. "Go back to the gutter you crawled out of. No one wants your kind sullying this fine establishment." She moved to steer them towards the door, clearly with the intent of taking matters into her own hands and shoving them out of the restaurant.
This only lasted as long as Dec suddenly turned their head and sank their teeth into her hand, making her cry out in pain. But it was enough of a distraction that they were able to escape her grip and hide behind Nec, trembling as their shoulder ached - there would be a bruise there, no doubt. "Ugh! You little rat, I'll have you arrested for this!" the woman snarled out, already stalking back towards them.
He should have paid attention, but Nec honestly didn't expect anything like that to happen! He'd been over getting plates and suddenly some harpy attacks Dec? Fast too, the kid had already wriggled away before Nec could utter a word.
If looks could kill the woman would drop dead though.
The bonus of being easily recognized. Nec had a reputation in Haven by now, not only as a Bluerider, but someone who could kick almost anyone's arse if need be. There were rumors going around he'd even beaten Keldos in a sparr! Not quite correct, he'd only come close (nobody beat an archangel, honestly) but Nec made any answer to direct questions ambiguous.
This harpy should know him.
"So what are you doing here then? Trying to kick out a kid? Never know who's guest they may be, hm?" As soon as Dec got behind him Nec put an arm around them, both for comfort and to make a point to this woman. Not anyone he'd seen before, maybe she was new? "I suggest you read up on who's allowed in the weyr cantine before you go make a bigger idiot of yourself, cacan." Nec glowered at her with contempt, daring her to reply.
The woman's eyes widened and she sputtered. "That's not- How- Why would someone like you allow vermin into this place? You know the rules! Don't think I won't speak to the weyrleader about this! To think that a Rider would permit a homeless vagabond biting a poor woman..." She let out a huff. "See if I ever come to this place again while street rats are allowed to frequent it, hmph!" With that she flounced out of the establishment and it was only when she was out of sight that Dec seemed to be able to stop trembling. "A-Are you going to get rid of me?" Their voice was soft, unsure. After all, they had bitten her, but to be fair she had grabbed them first...rather harshly at that.
Though they weren't sure what all of the talk had been about Nec being a 'Rider,' they could only guess that meant he was someone much more important than they had first thought. But if Nec really was so important, why would he have agreed to take them in in the first place. It didn't make sense. Weren't important people supposed to be cruel? But Nec seemed so much different than the rest of the monsters they'd encountered. Their thought process was interrupted by their stomach growling.
"All I saw was a kid defending themselves from an unprovoked attack. Have fun telling Sandasa how you tried to get rid of someone's guest." Nec's voice had turned from steel to butter, he even smiled, but it was a daring smile, the way someone smiled before tearing into an extra tasty meal that had wronged them. "Looking forward to your absence" Nec called after her, smirking before turning to Dec.
"You alright?" Crouching down, Nec looked them over but didn't spot any actual injuries. Kid looked worried though. "Absolutely not. She had it coming and if you hadn't bitten her, I might have." At the sound of their stomach, nec chuckled. "Food first, hm? Then I don't know, you wanna rest, get some sleep? Or a tour?"
"Food and sleep sounds good," came the quiet response from Nec's companion; they'd been through a lot, so it was understandable that they were probably exhausted. One person could only take so much before they became overwhelmed, whether from exhaustion or stress. Sleeping it all off was probably the best thing Dec could do right now, even though technically they shouldn't be sleeping after they ate. They moved towards the selection of greens first, oddly enough - perhaps it was the many colors that made the vegetables and fruits seem attractive to them? Though if they were like any other kid their age, they might not like the vegetables that they were currently putting on their plate. Well, they would learn what they liked and disliked at least.
To be honest, Nec was surprised Dec wasn't already half asleep, but he also knew what hunger could do to your mind and how it would keep you awake long enough to eat your fill. When Dec was done eating, however, they should probably get moving before the kid fell asleep at the table.
At the selection, Nec limited his pick to some fruit, a bit of melon, and some of the ham. He wasn't actually hungry but figured Dec might feel weird if he was the only one eating.
Once back at their table Nec ate slowly, subtly studying the kid. Thin, young, he'd been through a lot. He wouldn't mind letting Dec live with him until Dec decided to do something else, but he wasn't about yo pressure them either. Nec was curious though.
Dec had already taken a few bites of the various bread, vegetables, fruits, and so forth that littered their plate, slowly but surely figuring out that they preferred white bread over wheat bread, peas over broccoli, and peaches over bananas. But when Nec asked what kind of world they came from, they slowly lowered the peach that they had been munching on and glanced down. "It's hell," they answered softly. "The sky is always covered by dark clouds and wherever you turn a corner there will probably be something to kill you. There are no animals except for the occasional crow or rat. Kids are killed on sight by the adults around them. The transmission..." Their voice broke for a moment. "The transmission ruined everything." They couldn't meet his gaze, their hands beginning to tremble slightly.
Ah, bad subject. Damn. Nec made a face. "Sorry. You don't have to answer if you don't want to." He couldn't imagine a world like that, but considering that teacher they hold about he wasn't surprised.
"Look." Putting his fork on his plate, Nec looked them in the eye. "I know what you're going through. Trust me, I do. Maybe not the same causes, but it's nit that long since I didn't trust anyone either. I'm three hundred years old and I've only had people I truly trust for the last... 4 or 5 I think?" If Dec didn't meet his gaze, Nec would duck down to attempt to coax them to look up. "It's hard as hell at first, but it's definitely possible. And most people here are nice." A bad start with that harpy, but Nec would be keeping an eye out for her. And introduce Dec to his own friends.
