Dec looked down again, fiddling with a napkin. "But how do you tell the monsters from the good ones if they look just like everyone else?" they asked quietly. They still couldn't be sure that no one would hurt them, and Nec couldn't watch them all the time to make sure they weren't going to be harmed. But on the other hand, Dec did know far better than to go with strangers and how to run and hide and fight back if needed to, though they were still too weak to wield a weapon of their own. But...perhaps that could be remedied.
"When I get stronger..." Dec murmured, meeting Nec's gaze again. "Could you teach me how to fight?" It would probably be in their best interests to learn how to better defend themself - biting someone was one thing, but it wouldn't necessarily work in all scenarios.
"Sometimes you don't. Sometimes they will seem nice and friendly and then in the blink of an eye try to Bute your head off." He wasn't gonna sugarcoat it, that wouldn't help them at all in the long run. Some critical thinking wasn't bad. "But." Nec made a point. "Most are nice. I've met a lot more kind people who'll help when they can than bad ones, those I can still count on one hand." Smiling, Nec took a bite of a melon, rind and all. Really, he couldn't remember anyone nasty at all in the village, and the harpy woman was the first not nice one he'd met in the weyr too.
"Sure, if you want to. Got any experience from before? Aside from using your teeth, though that's a sound tactic too" he teased, smirking. "I'm best with a sword and smaller blades. I'm learning to use a staff from Keldos, but I'm sure he wouldn't mind an extra pupil."
Dec flinched at that. "They eat people here?" they asked, their voice trembling slightly. Glancing down at the meat on their plate, they suddenly felt sick and pushed it away. Maybe they should just focus on their vegetables and fruits instead...that way they were at least certain that they weren't eating someone who might have wound up on their plate. They weren't sure what to make of his words - either the monsters were well-hidden or Nec simply hadn't run into too many of them. Maybe it was a combination of both? Whatever the case, they knew they would have to be even more careful and observant.
"No... I'm not very strong, so I can't use too many weapons," they answered quietly. "I've tried." Maybe if they had been stronger, they wouldn't have lost an eye in the first place... They reached up to scratch at their bandages.
"Hah! No-" Nec had to laugh a bit, he couldn't help it, but sobered fast. "No, it's just a figure of speech. That's beef, from a cow. I think I got some deer if you wanna try?"
Shrugging at their admission, Nec didn't think much of it. Especially kids, very few had the strength unless they trained regularly. And what kid did that? "Nobody does at first. And even those well trained usually find that they're strong the wrong places for a certain weapon. Like me, I can swing a sword easy, but when I first started with the staff I ached in muscled I fifnt even know I had. You'll get stronger when you get started." He pushed Dec's plate back towards him. "Long as you get some protein. Veggies can be good, but you need meat to build up your strength."
"What's a cow?" Dec asked, though they seemed relieved to hear that the meat wasn't human flesh. They took a small bite, and while they didn't completely dislike it they would have preferred it to be cooked a bit more. "And a deer?" They didn't think they'd heard of either of those animals before, if animals they were. For all Dec knew, they could just be different fruits and vegetables that just happened to grow meat instead. "Is there a difference between a sword and a knife?" They knew what a knife was but maybe sword was just another word for it that they didn't recognize? Or maybe it was a different kind of weapon entirely, like a pipe or ladle... They didn't know but they were hopeful that Nec would be willing to answer their questions.
Right. Animals weren't really a thing where Dec came from. Besides rats and crows. "Cows are animals-hmm... Cattle. That's the species name I guess. That's raised for meat and milk. They're game and usually easy to deal with." Of course there were differences there too, races of cattle, some more docile than others, but he figured they could get into that later. "Deers are wild game. Many people like to hunt them, myself included. There'd does and stags, female and male. When you're feeling better you can come along on a hunt if you'd like. No guarantee we'll spot anything, but...". He shrugged, smiling, kid needed an intro to the world anyway. "Oh, and there's a thing called the IF here. Short for Illogical Field. It just... does stuff. Turns trees to glass for a while, the sky green, rives to chocolate syrup. Literally anything you'd imagine, just so you're not surprised if suddenly everyone wakes up with donkey ears or something. It never really lasts."
Dec listened quietly to Nec's explanation, tilting their head slightly as they did their best to absorb all of the information they had been given. But what really scared them was the notion of the Illogical Field - that it seemed to have such power over not just the landscape but the people around it made them shiver. "Has it ever killed or seriously injured others?" they asked softly, wondering if maybe they had only traded their personal hell for another one where, while most people were nice, everything could simply be destroyed at the whim of the Illogical Field. If it could kill plants and...whatever fish were, then what was stopping it from hurting people? As far as they knew, trees couldn't just be turned to glass and return to normal like nothing had ever happened. That sort of thing should, in all likelihood, have the consequence of killing the unfortunate trees that had been turned to glass in the first place. Nothing ordinary would have survived that. "If it can kill plants and fish, what's stopping it from killing people...?"
To be fair, Nec had gotten used to the IF by now, as much as you got used to the strange thing, and so didn't think if how scary it might seem to someone unfamiliar with it.
Until Dec asked their question at least.
"Oh, nono, it goes back to normal after howevel long the IF decides. I don't think things last much more than a few hours, maybe a day. Far a si know a least, and it probably depends on what it does to." Okay so he was guessing a bit with the duration, but one thing he was sure of at least. "But it's never killed anyone, or anything."
Dec visibly relaxed. Still, that didn't really assure them as to what side effects that a tree being turned into glass or whatever might happen to those that lived in a river that suddenly turned into chocolate. Unless the local wildlife had long become immune to the Illogical Field's random changes to the environment? They didn't know, but maybe Nec would be willing to elaborate further on the effects that it might have on Teragaia's inhabitants. "I'm glad it's never killed anything..." they mumbled, taking another bite of their steak. "I just hope that things stay that way..."
"Should. It's been a thing on this world for as long as anyone knows, and aside from accidents that likely would've happened anyway, I don't think anyone's gotten hurt." The IF was neither good or bad, it just was. And did funky things. "Everything seems to either have adapted. Fish keeps swimmi g, trees go back to growing, what have you."
Dec nodded and glanced down at their plate once they felt that they couldn't possibly eat any more. They hadn't managed to eat quite as much as they'd put on their plate, but they could take it back with them for later. "I can take this back with me, right?" they asked. It wasn't like they knew when they would be able to eat like this again, so might as well save as much of it as possible.
