She would shake her head and wave her free hand about. "Apparently whatever happened when you disappeared from there, caused your memory to get scrambled. Though I just have to wonder why? What is your brain trying to protect you from...Or who doesn't want you remembering us?" She doubted it was the land itself. Jasper remembered just fine. Or maybe she was an anomaly? It was hard to tell without finding the others and she didn't know if anyone else was around from then.
"If you never remember, it is okay. We can just start over." It would be hard on her, but obviously, the memories didn't want to surface. And at least she had Nec back. That was all she had wanted really. Him back or knowledge that he was okay. Reaching across the table, she offer him her hand. "Hello Nec. I'm Jasper. Tis a pleasure."
"Maybe? I just know that I'm missing three years that fits with the age I was when you knew me. Sometimes it feels like the fog aaaalmost would lift, but then it just crashes back." He glanced at her at the idea, urh, that was creepy. "Don't know if there's anyone who'd do that? But maybe... Was the place that bad you think? That I'd forget out of... what, self preservation or something?" To be honest he'd rather forget the five months after he returned. "It's like with Tangle, but you make more memories come out. Maybe she's from there too?" But damn, what was the chances of that? "She just seems familiar in a weird way and Tangle isn't the right name. You know how sometimes you watch a movie and you know you've seen it before but can't remember? But every time something happens you go 'yes, that's right'? That's how this is, you say something and somehow I know it's right, even if I still can't actually remember it." Was he making any sense?
His sandwich gone, Nec picked the rockslide cake and a small fork. "Jasper! Yes!" The exclamation turned a few heads but he didn't care, instead he smiled warmly and took her hand. "Thank you. I'm pretty sure I'll remember eventually but who knows how long it'll take. And I'm Necthan de earns."
She laughed, glad that she could at least give him a smile after handing him some heavy stuff to ponder. "Tangle? I don't know anyone by that name specifically. I think I would have to see her to know who she was on my end." The sandwich was polished off and she started in on the bun. "And Necthan? No wonder you never actually told me. I only knew you really by Nec or Rocky." And if he had told her at some point, she had probably forgotten cause it didn't sound near as fun to tease him with as Nec or Rocky did.
"Shouldn't be impossible, she's around here i think." By which he meant Weyr and town, not the bakery specifically. "Redhead, pretty short, freckles." He could probably introduce them at some point. Tangle didn't seem to know him though, so maybe she just looked like someone from back then?
"Ey, why d'you think I go by Nec? Necthan is... eh, fine I guess but I prefer Nec." He had to laugh at her own nickname for him though. "Rockynwas a movie on earth. Several actually and I'm definitely not a boxer." Grinning he stuck his tongue out like any reasonable adult. "Likewise, I kept thinking Kitty was just wrong and it was something with a J. Arrow!" Almost jumping in his seat he pointed at her. "That's how we met! That's where I had the forest from!" An actual memory!
"That actually describes more than a few people that had wondered through there. That place seemed to attract a lot of red heads." And someone else from there was wondering around here? What were the odds of that? Probably actually fairly good since both places had a habit of picking up people that it seemed to need or wanted or whatever.
"Huh. Didn't know that at the time and obviously didn't know that till just now. I called you rocky cause you were a hard headed son of a bitch and liked to eat rocks. Even got into a bit of pickle from it for a couple of days I think." That had been great! But sadly, it was short lived as Nec had eventually figured it out. She jumped as he shouted arrow and quickly ducked. Looking up at him Jasper fought the urge to start crying. He couldn't know that her and arrows had a bad history. Their meeting was really just the thought. "Yep. Got shot in the leg and you bandaged me up. And then tried to convinced me to go to the doctor for about a day."
"Eh, yeah I figured, especially when I don't even have the right name. Wonder why she changed it though." Musing for a second, Nec shrugged, if it was someone he knew he'd ask if and when he remembered.
"Pff, fair, and I still like to eat rocks. Sandstone is the best unless I can get some quartz or amethyst. Hah, once I bought a piece of methyst from a human and ate it right there, you should've seen his face!" he'd probably thought Nec was a lunatic! A pickle? "You can't say tht and not tell me more. A pickle for eating rocks?" Interested, Nec let his chair fall back to all fours and leaned forward. "Well?" Do tell.
Her reaction caught him off guard and left Nec wide eyed, knowing he'd done something bad but not what! She definitely looked upset, gone was the humor and teasing and Nec winced. "Sorry, I didn't-- didn't mean to scare you. What...?"
She forced the grin on her face and shook her head. "No no no. You don't remember, you are fine. Arrows and I have a bit of a history and none of it good. Turns out most farmers don't really like seeing a puma on the edge of their lands. Even if their flock are perfectly fine." That was a mild lie. But no sense in bringing up memories that would only make her cry and him frustrated for not remembering.
"And yes. Quite a pickle! It was amazing and more than a few of us had a good laugh at your expense. Like I said, you figured it out soon enough, but until then..." The smile this time was warm and an actual smile this time. "And I don't think I will at the moment. I would rather see if you remember it or not."
"Well I can see you're not fine, but gotcha, I'll keep it in mind." And hopefully remember, it was easier to not make a mistake if he did. She was clearly holding back things but that was fine, she wasn't obliged to tell him anything. "Nah, true, a lot of them tend to shoot first and stuff the predator into a marsh before even thinking of asking questions. Glad you're alive. Again, sorry." He smiled carefully, apologetic.
"Oh! So everyone laughing at me then?" Normally that would be an unpleasant thought but somehow... it wasn't. It felt like an inside joke that he was part of even if he hadn't and dint know what it was about. "Damnit now I'm curious! Uuuuurh." Flopping back he stared at the sky. "We're you this impossible there too? A wonder I didn't just eat you instead."
"We discussed it and both decided that given other options, humans weren't on the menu. Too gross tasting to really be in favor." Dragging over the other piece of cake, she started to dig in. Ahhh...Chocolate. She loved chocolate. "And yes I was. You tended to enjoy it anyway. Since you know...You never ended up actually eating me." Grinning, she waved her fork at him. "Besides, if you attempt to now, pretty sure you would have more than a few people mad at you. Surprisingly, it isn't easy to find people willing to work a waitress job for someone named after food."
"Wait I told you that? That I'd-" He glanced around and gave her a look of 'you know what I mean'. No need to freak out the others guests, it wasn't that far between the tables.
"Eh, yeah probably, you're fun." He was still surprised she liked him enough to be his friend back then, but... Maybe he was less of a bastard? "There's more than one way to eat you, you know." Grinning he took the last bite of his chocolate cake and leaned back. "But I'll behave, wouldn't want people mad at me, especially not anyone t the bakery." But he had to wonder, "What does being named after food have to do with getting a waitress job?"
"Yep. We got onto the topic as I think we were talking about cooking at the time. And biting. All the biting." Laughing, that cake was gone way too fast in her opinion. "Oh I know. You however got to learn that lesson the hard way." Which did relate a bit to the pickle thing and eating a rock. She wondered if he was going to connect the two there or not...Not that Jasper was going to help him do either one. Where would the fun be in that? None. That is what she thought.
"You know. I don't know. Apparently Lasagna scares off a lot of potential staff. I mean, to be fair. When he caught me stealing food off of plates coming back when I first started working for him, I thought he was going to tear my hand off and toss me in jail." Her hand made a tossing motion and acted like she was closing and locking a door. "But no, he was actually more mad that I was stealing half eaten food when I had access to food that could be all my own. He is actually pretty nice. Even lets me stay in his office at night when I have no where else to go."
The hard way? How did he-- ooooohhh, yeah that word, oh gods had he been that naive?! "Hah! Holy shit, seriously?" Grinning wide Nec could only laugh at himself. Not his fault the term hadn't been invented yet back then!
"He's easily angry then. Could be a put-off to many, angry bosses are horrible employers. If you know me you probably know I speak from experience." She should know, let's see if she remembered the name. "Wait you don't have a place to stay?"
"Yes. Seriously. You were mentioning something about eating jasper the rock for dinner and then it just sort of escalated from there." A grin that reached all the way to her eyes as she replayed the memories. "That was the pickle by the way. You were just so lost and confused. It was quite adorable." Draining the rest of her mocha, she laughed.
"You could say that. Passionate too. He maybe angry Nec, but he is also a fair boss. He gets just as mad at himself as he does the employees and despite owning the place, I've seen him do jobs even employees turn down! And yeah..." Her gaze turned a bit hard at that, low growl in her throat. "You did have one horrible boss. Told me once how he just ate someone alive. I still say that would give someone indigestion."
Shaking her head at the last part, it was quickly followed by a shrug. "Not really? Never bother to find one. The public showers are good enough to clean most things like myself and clothing. I get food at my job now. And when I don't sleep in the office, I just roam around town most of the night."
"Pffff, of course I did!" Grinning wide Nec leaned over the table. "Of course, and someone made the wrong connections." He was almost giggling, imagining the scene and what the others had thought! Maybe that he was an idiot but then again maybe not. Either way it sounded fun! "I can only imagine, and you found me adorable?" Oh yes he was teasing!
"Well as long as he's fair I don't mind angry bosses." Employees turned down jobs where they worked? "If they turn down jobs while they work for him maybe he's better off without them. I mean sure, some jobs suck but it's part of it, right?" An if the boss did them too and didn't use them as punishment Nec didn't see why employees should turn them down.
"Ah! Yeah that was Gunmar. He's still doing that on occasion far as I know. But I prefer him over Stricklander."
Aaaah, understandable, how long had he been here before setting on a place? Months at least, he suspected closer to a year going by the seasons. Buuuut with the IF it was a bit tricky." I wandered around too for ages. But looking now and once I find one feel free to crash there if you want." He didn't think he'd mind a random drop-in by Jasper, even if they just met, sort of. For the second time. Weeeeird, but he liked her and he'd gotten good at trusting his guts about people. Definitely still suspicious, but getting better!
"Oh yes. It was quite adorable as you begged us to tell you what the hell was going on. We weren't exactly...Forthcoming either." Oh. They had all been jerks to each other, but it was all in good nature fun.
"Eh. More like in general I guess I should say. I've had a lot of jobs and not everyone was as willing to work together as they should have been." She made a face before shaking her head. "But most of the people there are pretty great. Lasagna is pretty great too. It is one of the nicer jobs I've had since leaving."
Good thing she wasn't drinking anything or she might have spit it at Nec. "Nec...How the fuck do you manage to survive all that? Like. Seriously. How is your cheeky ass still alive?" Tilting her head at him, she grinned. "I'll keep that in mind Nec. I do tend to get a bit lonely at night and it would be comforting to sleep next to someone again. Especially with no other strings attached."
