Mildred trudged through the snow on her way home. Breath puffed out in thick clouds as she huddled her hands deeper into her pockets. She brushed across a stone and an image flashed through her mind. An image of a man she hadn't seen in a long time. She felt her heart ache as pulled the stone from her pocket.
Ahh. So that is where the sapphire and quartz duo ended up. That would explain why she hadn't been able to find it earlier.
Pausing in her walk, she cup the stones carefully in her gloved palm. Ignoring the chill biting at her fingertips, she pondered if she wanted to remember more. She had no way back to him. No true way to contact him even and it had been so long...
A soft sigh escaped her as she let her finger close over the stone. Activating the properties, she felt the tears turn to snowflakes as the memories washed over her. They were bittersweet right now. More so now that it was a time of year for spending with loved ones and family. Mildred had found family here. Had family here. There was Jeremi. Her own cousin. And Rune. Someone she had know before she came here.
Then there was Kemori and Nec. Linah. The dragon riders. They were her new family here. But she still missed the one she left behind. Zardik and Victor and everyone else. Even Axras was missed a little bit by her.
Pocketing the stone, she carried on with her path home. She had to put it in the past. Had to for her own sake or she might finally become bitter. Funny how none of her exes had managed to instill that feeling in her, but someone she never truly broke up with could...Probably because of that very reason. It hadn't ever been a true goodbye. She wondered how long it had taken him to notice. To give Zardik some credit, Mildred knew it would be a little bit. It wasn't the first time she had 'disappeared' so it wouldn't be like alarm bells would immediately go off.
Reaching her door, she turned the knob and pushed into it. Freezing at the threshold. She had caught...Something. Years of hunting supernatural beings had lead her to trust her gut when it told her something was different. Even if she couldn't place it. The only reason she wasn't drawing her weapons right now was because her companions also knew someone else was there and weren't warning her away.
Mildred crept forward into what amounted to a living room. The lights were off, only the soft glow from the Christmas lights one of the riders had insisted on putting up out on the sunning rock breaking up the darkness.
It did nothing to help the silhouette of the man standing in her living room. A shape she would know anywhere.
"Zar-Zardik." Pushing past the lump in her throat and the tears coming down her cheeks, she would launch herself at him, wrapping him tightly in a hug.
She wasn't going to ask how or why now or for how long. That wasn't how miracles worked, because that is what this had to be right? Some kind of miracle and she wasn't about to question it.
