Single: Rynther
Plural: Rynther
Group: Herd
Young: Calf/Foal
Communication: Emotional projection to bond, otherwise usual bovine vocalizations.
Size Range: 5-6 feet at the shoulder fully grown.
Coloration: Natural colors and patterns, horns/hooves and bright colored strips down their back depend on rank.
Bonding Age: 3-6 months generally as this is when they are living on their own away from the herd. Will not naturally bond once fully grown at 1 year or part of a herd, barring external circumstances.
-General Information-
Generally bovine in appearance, the Rynther are covered in short coarse fur and strong muscle. A strip of slightly longer wiry hair runs down their back, and is often the only likeness of a bright color on their bodies other than their horns. Males are equipped with a double set of horns, one larger set with a smaller set placed just in front of them, while females have only the smaller set. One of the most imposing parts about them is the fact that they are covered in long thin spines protruding from their back and joints that are always black in color no matter the other colors on them. They live in large Matriarchal herds- though only the few males that are the Queens chosen mates stay around, while all other males born are not welcome back after they learn to fend for themselves at a young age. Lone males will sometimes band together in smaller groups, though often the Bellum ranks are not included in this due to their extra violent and reactive nature.
-Mating Information-
The Rynther, being so aggressive, have a bloody and sometimes deadly breeding ritual. Males will gather and try to impress the females with feats of strength and anger. They will fight and gore each other. The last Rynther standing wins the favor of the female- though if the female is a Nihilum she will often stop the fighting before it turns deadly and instead choose her favorite of the suitors, directing the others to accept defeat and go.
-Bonding Information-
Once the Young Rynther are 3 months old, the mother will cut them off and abandon them to fend on their own for three months before accepting them back into the herd, but males are abandoned for good. Rynther of the ages 3-6 months will band together to stay alive. Their horns are short and stubbly, and the males will not have grown more than a lump of the second set, and the spines on their backs are not fully grown and are short and dull.
This is the only time a Rynth may be bonded to. Any that approach and attempt to speak or act kindly towards them will promptly be ran off. The only way to bond to a Rynth is to capture one and successfully overpower it.
When they have been captured and successfully broken, they will send feelings of defeat and you must have some sort of collar or band to wrap around the base of their horn or they will simply escape again as soon as they feel they can.
-Naming Information-
They will generally accept any name, though they often wont respond to names they deem too "weak" sounding, except for some Esurio.
-Ranks-
Nihilum 5*
The only all-female rank, the Nihilum queens are thankfully a generally calmer sort than the rest of the ranks and have a sort of quiet power that all the other Rynther are compelled to obey. Though they are not always the largest of the ranks, they are at least equal to an average sized Bellum. They rarely fight other Rynther except another Nihilum when defending their territory and herd from another, but they will be quick to fight anything else that they feel threatened by, regardless of size. This rank is often solid black or gray, though they may have some other natural colors, and the longer bristly hair down their back is some shade of purple. Their horns and hooves are always pure white. They can have up to 7 babies at a time.
Bellum 4*
Possibly the most aggressive of all the ranks, the Bellum is generally larger than all ranks below it and sometimes even larger than the queens, though they still stay obedient to her. Though most all Rynther are heavily muscled the Bellum rank is the most obvious, with horns and hooves of a deep blood red. Often some shade of dark brown, gray, or a mix of the two, the streak of hair down their back is always some shade of red or orange. The spines that cover their back and joints are usually shorter on average than other ranks, though just as sharp. Lone male Bellum Rynther are often a deadly threat to wanderers who don't have some ability to fight back, or a shiny large or powerful enough to resist their sheer strength. Females can have up to 5 babies at a time- but they will often abandon any Famine babies at the time of birth if they are not bonded themselves.
Mortis 3*
Somewhat smaller than Bellum Rynther on average, the Mortis rank are also much more lithe and less muscled, though still just as dangerous. Preferring to spend their time relaxing than actively looking for a fight, the Mortis are most likely to wander off from the herd and live alone, though they will still come to help when their Nihilum queen calls for them. Most often white all over with only a few smaller markings of natural colors, they have pure black horns and hooves, matching the extra long and sharp spines that cover their back and joints. The strip of hair down their back is always some shade of blue, though often a pale, ghostly shade. Females can have up to 3 babies at a time, though they don't call them back to the herd without direction from their queen and instead leave them to fend for themselves.
Lues 2*
Possibly the most cruel of all the ranks, if not the most violent, the Lues Rynther like to torment those who they are fighting- often prodding them all over with their oddly serrated horn tips or whipping them with the long spikes this rank has at the tip of their tail, unlike the rest. They are usually smaller and leaner than the ranks above, though still strong and able to take on anything their size or smaller easily. Often different shades of brown with other brown or gray markings. Their horns are unique in that they are not a solid color- fading from a dark brown to a sickly yellow at the serrated tips of the horns, though their hooves are solidly brown. They have the most dense covering of spines on their back, even if they are more average sized, to go along with the few that also grow from the furred tip of their tail. The streak of fur on their back is always some shade of green or yellow. Females can have up to 2 babies, and they are oddly protective and tend to stay somewhere nearby even when they run the young off to test their survival as all Rynther do.
Esurio 1*
By far the smallest of all, the Esurio Rynther are pushed around and bullied by the rest of the herd, and often band together to protect themselves. No matter how much they eat they always appear sickly and thin, with skinny, short horns and very few of the spines on their back and none on their joints. They are most likely to run instead of fight, though they can still cause damage to an enemy the same size or smaller and will fight back when they feel threatened- though in the case of bonding, they will submit to their bond the easiest and after the shortest time fighting and trying to flee, most realizing they will have a much easier life than living in a wild herd. Usually some shade of tan or cream with other brown markings, their horns and hooves are always a pale shade of gray, and the streak of fur down their back a simple plain white. Females will only ever have 1 baby at a time, usually another Esurio or Lues, though they may rarely have a Mortis if the father was a Mortis or Bellum.
