Fait didn't even look behind her as she reached into her PAK again, retrieving a portable plasma cannon. It was larger than a normal gun, perhaps, but it packed enough power despite its size to take out a Hogulus, so it should suffice here. Pressing a few buttons on it, she then angled it towards the flailing giant.
She had a clear shot at the beast's unprotected chest and that was precisely where she was aiming. Once the plasma cannon was fully charged, it unleashed a blast powerful enough to knock her backwards but at the same time it blew a hole clear through the giant's chest, just as she'd known it would. Nothing would have been able to survive that, and she staggered back to her feet with a victorious grin on her face.
This battle was over. Now she just needed to figure out how to get out of this strange world that she had been trapped in... Maybe the feather that she had managed to seize from the giant's hair earlier was her key back to reality. Either way, she had quite a bit of work to do when she returned.
Tidesweep The ropes snapped back into place and her sidekick was free! Letting out a cheer, she nearly choked on it as the feather went into the bag along with the rest of the jewels. No! Tide needed that to save her friend. Hands clenched into fists as she looked around for something to help her. Her sidekick moved forward now that most of the jungle gym had been taken care of, but Tide didn't think that a frontal assault would work.
Nor did she think it would be a good idea to start singing.
Looking down at her belt, her eyes caught the grappling hook gun and then tracked to what it had done to the ropes. Did she have more left? Digging into the pouch, she had one left. One shot to make this work.
Digging through the belt to grab everything she needed, she started moving forward, tapping the last ball to the middle of the hook. "Stop! You aren't getting away!" Skidding to a stop, she lined up her sight with the blades of the cooper and fired. It would either work or it would fail and she would have to track the Jester down another way.
But she would get that feather.
Gertude
Gertude relaxed as the octophant didn't run her down, squishing her flatter than a pancake. Or a sheet of paper. She didn't really want to know which would be worse. Slowly lowering her hands, she glanced at the giant beast and her face went into one of awe. They were amazing! Simply amazing! She tried to commit as much to memory to show her companion later. They had to see this!
Realizing there was a pattern to the sounds now, Gertude tried to puzzle it out. What were they saying? She must admit that she was a bit at a lost. Puzzles in textile patterns were one thing, but speech puzzles something else.
Frowning as she caught sight of that rope, she started to approach slowly. Hand reaching out to lightly touching the rope and then her own hands going around her neck to mimic taking something off from there. Is that what they wanted? She would be more than happy to help the poor creature and her inner fire lit up to think that someone had decided to have this beautiful being as a pet and then...
She focused on keeping calm thoughts. Plenty of time for punching things later.
Now this was something Nec was familiar with! The arrow to his hood had been a bit too close for comfort, he'd ducked too late, but he knew he'd sort of asked for this with that last shot.
The longsword drawn and the bow in his other hand, Nec took a quick look around before focusing on the sheriff's charge.
But the sheriff wouldn't get the fight he wanted! The man was charging, Nec did the same but a split second before their swords clashed Nec ducked! Sliding low he used the bow to wack at the sheriff's legs in a hope to trip him, then straight up and headed for Marion, taking down a couple of guards fighting some villagers. They were more than the guards, but the guards were better trained, and Nec had to assume the guards would eventually win. No way the prince didn't have backup troops somewhere.
But!
Marion. She had the feather and Nec was well aware that's what he was here for! The starmane-caradras was close, keeping several guards at bay, giving Nec a chance to duck down to the princess. "Quite a party you got, m'lady." Grinning, he gave her a wink, not at all taking notice of how one approached royalty. Nec had never been much for etiquette, after all. The tables shielded them from behind, cloth hanging down, but he still had a good view of where he'd come from, and the sheriff throwing about and long for him! Seemed like he'd lost track in the throng of people! Hah! "I believe you got something I need, miss."
With that final detonation, the giant gave a last, groaning roar and slumped where it sat, arms falling to its sides limply.
Fait was victorious!
Returning to the ground would be simple enough without the flailing giant and the persistent wind to interfere. A few people would be emerging from a farmhouse a small distance away, far too distant for conversation and certainly having been in hiding from the giant for the battle. Fait had saved them!
That was amazing, my liege! complimented the Hippocampus as he returned, leaving the horse grazing placidly a bit behind him. I can only apologize for not being more of a help to you in the battle. Perhaps with more learning I will become stronger and able to help you more.
Whatever Fair might have said in response to that small speech would never be heard as the feather fluttered as if in a slight breeze with the scent of cinnamon and sunlight, and everything would go blindingly brilliant white.
And as they vanished from the scene the peasants approached the broken remains of their windmill, wondering what just happened.
((And you have completed your book! Please wait until the others have finished theirs, then you will see the results.))
Necthan
The Sherrif grinned broadly when he saw his nemesis seemingly so agreeable for the battle, and he poised his sword for a downward swing - but he caught only air as Nec went low, then was sent tumbling into three of his own men who were trying to flank the heroic Changeling from the strike to his legs! He cursed at them and shouted as he tried to untangle himself.
"Get him! Get that blasted Necthan!" Several guards tried to converge on Nec but loyal common folk began hurling anything that came to hand from rocks to weaponry and even a couple of barrels to slow them down.
"Oh, thank heavens you're alright!" Maid Marion praised when Nec reached her, looking at him with both gratitude and affection in her eyes; yep, she was smitten with her outlaw hero. Glancing at the crowd Nec would also see other people now fighting with blades and bows; his allies, he'd just know, having mingled with the crowd just in case something like this happened. But the question posed to her would have Marion a little confused. "I have something you require?"
Meanwhile in the royal box the Starmane-Caradras hybrid was now working to cover the lady-in-waiting's escape from the Prince, parrying the prince's attacks until the young, corrupt royal, fearfully realizing he was facing a superior opponent, fell back with cries for aid. The lady-in-waiting and the hybrid retreated, joining Nec and Marion in their temporary shelter.
Perhaps this is not the best of places for a discussion, the Hybrid panted, though the light of battle's thrill would be brilliant in his eyes. I fear we will be quickly outnumbered if we stay here. We should retreat to the woods!
"Aye," agreed the lady-in-waiting, "and take her ladyship with you at least – she will know no peace or safety with the Prince, not now!" All three would be looking at Nec for the word to run, and an escape plan.
((Last round for you! You have to get everyone out safely. The NPCs will follow your orders and the Merry Men you don't have to worry about; when you retreat they'll make their own getaway. Though you can use them for distraction as need be!))
Tidesweep
With the Hippogryph in pursuit the Jester wouldn't be keeping a super close eye on Tidesweep. Twisting around he threw a bag of marbles in the creature's path, tangling his feet up and sending his wings flapping haphazardly for balance. He didn't fall and was soon chasing again but it gave the villain something of a good lead. With a mocking laugh he vaulted into the open door of the helicopter and his minion at the controls started to maneuver the machine skyward.
"You lose this time, you caped troublemaker!" the Jester laughed, waving the bag out the door to taunt his foe. But his laughter was cut very short, turning to a noise of confusion as Tide fired the grappling hook gun.
The hook soared through the air and impacted at the base of the blades, the paint instantly starting to eat away at the metal with a hiss and a release of smoke. But that wasn't all – the hook itself had a long length of cord attached and as the rotor blades continued to spin rapidly it was wound around and around the motor and the blades, tangling them up. Between the two the helicopter began to wobble and spin about midair, coming down with crashing velocity! The copter tipped over entirely, the blades sheering into the roof and flying away to skid just shy of hurling off the edge. The pilot was sent flying onto the ground where the Hippogryph quickly pounced on him, using all four legs, both wings, and even a mouthful of shirt to hold him down.
Oh no you don't! Just stay down!
The Jester, similarly thrown from the open door he had been leaning out of, tumbled through the air and would've impacted the rooftop but for his legs getting tangled in the rope, leaving him hanging like a pinata, scraped and bruised but otherwise uninjured as it always seemed to happen. The bag of stolen jewels, and one precious feather, spilled over the roof all but at Tidesweep's feet as she came onto the rooftop.
"Curses!" the Jester cried, flailing and swinging impotent fists in the air as from somewhere below police sirens were heard. "Curse you and your annoying pest of a sidekick, Tidesweep! I'll win next time!" Granted, next time would probably come after a stint in prison, but it would at least be a few moments of peace.
And best of all, the feather was within Tide's grasp at last!
((You can conclude with anything you'd like, and I'll wrap your book then. Feel free to powerplay the police if you want, too.))
Gertude
The Octophant tensed briefly as Gertude approached, wary and clearly about to bolt - or attack – at the slightest untowards movement. But it didn't run, and even flinched when she touched the rope. But the gestures apparently got through for it lowered its head to let her remove the loop of hemp. It took a bit of loosening and adjusting to get it past the large ears and all the trunks, but finally it was away. The rope had been rather tight, and upon examination it would be clear that the thing had been around its neck for quite a while; it was weatherworn and frayed in spots like it had tried to remove the rope long before now but had been unable to.
Now free of its unwilling necklace the Oliphant took a deep breath, shaking its ears in seeming relief, then took a step back and trumpted in a tone that definitely would ring of exultation and freedom!
And from somewhere else, far away, would come a faint response in a like manner.
The Oliphant would raise back up to its impressive height, looking down at Gertude and the little Astrum, then take a knee once more, offering the feather it held in its trunk to her. Perhaps...a thank you gift?
Nec gave her a grin and a nod, keeping an eye out for anything immediately deadly. The sheriff was yelling, angry but looking in the wrong direction, his men milling about but the locals 'accidentally' kept blocking the view to Nec and Marion! More swords joined the fight, but Nec started seeing the tide turning in favor of the guards. Eager, but not trained villagers, Nec didn't want them risk their lives. Most likely they were the figments if the IF, but he couldn't know that fir sure, so enough was enough.
They couldn't stay here, under a damn table!
A last look around, taking in the scene, looking at opportunities, Necjumped at the arrival of the hybrid and Marion's lady-in-waiting!
Hah, a chance!
"Time's up, we can't stay. You." He looked at the Starmane-Caradras, not shy about giving orders. If the IF wanted him playing lead it better accept his way of playing too. "Get them into the forest. There's a huge oak two miles down the river." Nec had no idea how he knew that but quickly put it down to the same way he knew how to use a bow and arrow do perfectly. "The men will meet you there, as will I when I'm done here." Distraction indeed, but anyone who knew the changeling would know he'd never use anyone but himself as a distraction. Besides. He was perfect for it, he was the one they were after! "Count to ten, then get out. Miss Marion, may I have that feather? Good luck charm, yes?" Juuuuuust in case he didn't manage to catch up to them.
Whether she gave it to him or said he could have it when they met by the tree, Nec smiled wide and gave her a wink before jumping up in the table! A sharp whistle that was bound to draw attention, he saw the sheriff turn and make big eyes.
"You are horrendous at hide and seek, aren't you! I've been sitting here all day!" Grinning wide, Nec gave a deep, taunting bow. "So I'll make it easy for you, poor thing." And with a one-fingeren Salut, the blue changeling was off! Sprinting between cheering villagers now very much ignored by the guards, the sheriff bellowing for pursuit!
But Nec was fast, and apparently knew the lay of the land in perfect detail! Dodging, turning, waiting, doubling back, it wasn't hard! A moment to check the others were getting away, just in time yo see the hybrid's hind end disappearing into the trees after the two women. A few close calls later, a taunt, if he kept this up he'd be by the tree only minutes after the others!
Tide would grin widely as her plan worked. Moving closer, she scooped up the feather and looked the Jester right into his eyes. "No you won't. Cause I will always be there to stop you." She glanced towards her sidekick, smiling. "And I will never be alone either. You might as well attempt to go straight, Jester. This whole criminal gig?" She would shrug slightly, looking down at the feather in her hand. "I don't think it is for you.
Gertude
Gertude wasn't a weaver for nothing. While challenging, she managed to get that rope off. Holding it in her hands, she didn't bother hiding the wide grin on her face as the octophant trumpeted their freedom. If she could have, she would have whooped in delight as well. Hands moving over the rope, she picked out the spots that were worn and frayed. Frowning, she would shake her head.
How could someone be so cruel?
Watching the beautiful creature, her eyes widened as they once again took a knee and offered...The feather! Reaching out slowly, she would take the feather and grinned. THANK YOU! She would shout the thoughts as loud as she could and she did her best to show her gratitude towards the octophant. This was going to help her friend so much!
With that final detonation, the giant gave a last, groaning roar and slumped where it sat, arms falling to its sides limply.
Fait was victorious!
Returning to the ground would be simple enough without the flailing giant and the persistent wind to interfere. Necthan
The Hybrid nodded at the instructions, pawing the ground and shaking his mane.
I remember the place – we'll get there, he promised. Good luck, and don't have too much fun without me! The last was said with a smirk as he nodded to the Lady in Waiting and Maid Marion to get on his back. The older female was quick to do so though the maiden hesitated.
"Please be careful, Necthan," she murmured, leaning forward to kiss his cheek, then pulled the feather rom her fan and handed it to him.
I'll keep her safe. She climbed up on the Hybrid's back and he flicked his tail, beginning to count.
The Sherrif spun about, expression beyond furious with insult and injury, literally in both cases.
"You wretched bandit!" he shouted as from the safety of his guards the Prince called out,
"Seize him! Seize him at once!!" Even as Necthan sent one more insult their way and darted off they followed, arrows flying and shouts at his heels.
By this point between his own followers and the villagers who were thoroughly supporting him it was indeed so easy to lose them.
Victory to Necthan!
Soon enough the group regathered at the arranced place, Maid Marion and her Lady in Waiting seated on the ground leaning up against the Starmane-Caradras' side as they rested and the others chatting and recounting events at the tournament, laughing as they shared their views of the Sherrif's incompetence. When they saw Necthan arrive they all cheered loudly in praise of his heroism, and Maid Marion jumped up, rushing to him and in a breach of propriety kissed him. The Lady in Waiting gasped in shock, and the Hybrid laughed.
You deserve that, my friend! he laughed.
Perhaps to Nec's regret (or relief) even as she pulled back everything was wrapped in brilliant, warm sunlight reminiscent of a healing touch, the scent of cinnamon and sunlight, and once more everything became white.
((And you've completed your book! Bravo!))

Tidesweep
The police would arrive in quick response, handcuffing the Jester and his minions so that the Hippogryph could return to Tidesweep's side. One officer with marks of a captain on his uniform approached, expression grateful.
"Once more, Masked Marvels, the city is in your debt as is the Prince and Prince of Karana for the return of their jewels. I'm sure they would want to thank you at their reception tomorrow night, if you'd be willing to make an appearance."
Whatever Tide's response would be, both she and her sidekick would quickly depart, her upon his back as usual. And even as they flew away there would be a wind bringing with it a heavenly melody, the scent of cinnamon and sunlight, and a brilliant dawn-white light that would be blinding.
((And you've finished your Comic book! Yay!))
***************
Gertude
The Octophant slowly, even regally, lowered his head then got to his feet, turning and departing as peacefully as could be.
That w-w-w-was incredible! came the Astrum's awed voice from beside Gertude. The little feline was looking up at her with wide eyes. You were so brave and so kind! I'm going to try and be as brave as you are! As if his words were the signal that something had been waiting for, a breeze rippled peacefully through the area with the scent of cinnamon and sunlight and the sky shifted to the golden rose of dawn. A moment later the sun dawned so brilliantly that once more Gertude was wrapped in white.
((And your storybook is complete!))
***********
Everyone
The brilliant white light would fade away, leaving everyone standing once more in the library only no longer unaccompanied. The creatures that had been with them in their stories would be standing with them, and the books they'd selected would be gone. Of those three remaining they would fall to the floor, opening with pages fluttering as white lights bounded out and raced from the building, seeking out their World's Only Consulting Detective, their Ringbearer, their One who Survived.
The feathers that the four held would flutter in their hands in the same breeze that fluttered the pages, plucked gently from their grasp to arc gracefully through the air in loops before circling together, faster and faster, glowing sun-yellow and then in a burst of that light Raferties would once more be standing in the building, blinking and looking dazed but otherwise unharmed.
"Well... that was something I have never experienced before," he admitted as his wings settled on his back. "Thank you all for helping me."
But that wasn't the only thing to happen.
My liege, the Hippocampus said with great respect, moving to stand before Fait and lowering his head, if you would permit, I would like to continue serving you and trying to learn from you. I would like to be useful.
Bond! Windmills or Wild Dragons, I've Your Lance Male Reef HIppocampi to Fait!
There won't be a tyrant that will withstand us, the Hybrid commented to Necthan with a horsey grin. And any that might try will rue the day!
Bond! From River's Bridge to Final Arrow I'm with You Make Equine Hybrid - Starmane/Caradras to Necthan!
At Gertude's ankles a little furry creature began pressing up against her, purring softly.
I know I'll n-n-never be sc-scared with you, if you will be my friend.
Bond!Even Scared, I'll Stand by You Male Quark Astrum
Beside Tidesweep the Hippogryph stamped a hoof on the floor, wings fluttering slightly and eyes bright.
Villains everywhere will be looking over their shoulders, and the good people will never worry about them as long as we have anything to say about it!
Bond! Fighting at your Back Against any Villain Male South Clan Hippogryph to Tidesweep!
((And Bonding Complete! I hope everyone had fun! Please make sure to check your creature's database entries for any naming conventions, and thank you for participating!))
"If you're going to address me properly, then call me commander," Fait told the hippocampus, looking him over with a critical eye. "You're far too used to those primitive weapons. If you're going to be of any use to me and thus to the empire, you're going to need to be put through some rather intense training. I do hope you won't disappoint me, Xyl. I do not take failure lightly, and neither should you."
Failure meant death on the battlefield and it was clear that Xyl wasn't used to real combat. Well, once he got used to proper Irken weapons and mastered the training simulations then that shouldn't be an issue. She could easily download them once she managed to get power running to her base and after that... Well, she would figure out how to leave this place with her new second in command and any other soldiers she managed to recruit while she was here.
Tide would almost collapse in relief. Raferties was okay! And now back in one piece, seemingly no worse for his time spent apart. Rubbing her face, it was a relief to be back in her normal clothing. Though she suppose she wasn't too surprise as she heard a familiar voice beside her. Seemed like her and that feather weren't the only things to escape that book. "I suspect we would have rather a lot to say about that, huh Saguara?" An arm came out to give the excited hippogryph a hug around his neck. She also made a mental note to start trying harder to carry a first aid kit wherever she went.
Gertude grinned and gave Raferties a thumbs up before bending down to scoop up the cat that had so bravely helped her out. I will be more than happy to be your friend, Brave. Don't sell yourself short though. You have a courageous heart. She would bop his nose before she waved to the others and took her leave.
((Sorry for taking so long to respond. Was looking for good names and then work decided I needed stress. But they are named now! Saguara is a type of cactus. One of the ones with an arm. Figured that was deserty enough. If not, just let me know!! Thank you so much Kay. I had fun))
