Arieh Harel knew that Impressing a dragon was well beyond the scope of his destiny, at least for the time being. A dragon could not complete an incomplete person. However, that didn't mean that he didn't occasionally head up to Haven Weyr to watch Hatchings. They were such inspiring, hopeful, happy events! It made him smile, watching dragons choose candidates and watching candidates become riders with that instant star-struck expression they got every time.
He was just leaving a Hatching when he was waylaid by a terribly hunched over figure, maybe three and a half feet tall -- although this person could have been taller if not for the awful posture, perhaps -- who hopped up to him and put something warm and hard and smooth and round in his hand before hopping off and disappearing into a cloud of smoke.
Arieh looked down into his hand. He found an egg. It was shaking.
"Fardling shards, again?" demanded a woman's voice behind him, and Arieh turned to see Weyrwoman Sandasa coming up the walkway, disbelief writ across her face. "That's the second time now- no matter, we need to get you to the kitchen, now!"
Arieh had never been so unceremoniously dragged in his life, but given the cracks appearing in the egg, it was obvious why. Sandasa all but threw him into a seat at a fireside table and called for a plate of meat scraps on the double, and while that was being served, Arieh watched as flakes of shell started breaking away from the cracks.
The air was suddenly full of green and brown firelizards, some mottles, some not, as Sandasa's fair appeared to hum the firelizard birthing song.
"It's weak, you're going to have to help it," Sandasa advised, watching the hatching process slow, as if the baby within the egg was tiring out.
Wordlessly, Arieh hooked his fingernails in the cracks of the egg and started lifting layers of shell apart. Stubborn shell, almost unwilling to break. No wonder the flit was having trouble. Eventually, however, he managed to break enough of it that a tiny little white thing tumbled free, creeling blindly with both eyes firmly closed.
"Feed it, but don't let it choke." Sandasa's further sage advice.
Arieh was quick to comply, grabbing bits of meat from the plate of scraps to feed this teeny creature as much as it could eat. Eventually, sated, it crawled into the palm of his hand to take a nap.
"Congratulations, you've gotten yourself a new firelizard," Sandasa told him, patting him on the shoulder.
Here's 5BP for one white firelizard, I don't care the gender. Owl whenever you get around to this that would be awesome. ^^
