Eight years ago, in Aphadon Weyr...
"Open your eyes, dear one."
Today was Jessera's nameday, and what a nameday it had been. Mama and Rialyth had woken her up early to go flying, and then papa had taken her swimming in the lake, and then they'd had dinner and talked for hours and now there were presents! Presents just for her! Papa had given her a new dress and promised her a new one 'when she outgrew that one', and mama had shown her a little section of the weyr gardens just for her, and- and then they'd asked her to close her eyes while they shuffled her into another room in their weyr.
Now Jess opened her eyes, and squealed aloud at the sight that awaited her.
"Do you know what these are?" Elanora asked, her tone rich with indulgent amusement.
"They're firelizard eggs!" Jess burst out, and only quick action on her father's part stopped her from grabbing them up then and there. "Are they really mine?"
"They are," J'sin confirmed, giving his daughter a quick spin before setting her back down. "You're twelve turns old today, Jess. That means you can be a candidate. Every dragonrider needs a firelizard of their own. You're going to be a dragonrider soon, so we wanted to give you your first."
Jessera looked back to her father, eyes wide and mouth forming a perfect 'O'. She might've stayed that way, too, had a quiet crack! not sent her head whipping back towards the eggs. The little shells rocked, they rolled, they trembled- and then two perfect little heads broke shell, one gold, one brown.
Once she stopped happy-crying and blubbering thanks, Jessera named them Rukbat and Belior.
Female Gold Rukbat -- Jessera
Male Brown Belior -- Jessera
I'll use my 2- and 3-star tokens for Rukbat and pay 15 BP for Belior.
