By all accounts, it was an ordinary day, and yet Weyrwoman Sandasa was not happy.
For once, her displeasure had nothing to do with what was happening under her own roof, so to speak.
"You sure about this, Sandasa?" Jahena drawled, sprawled across the couch in Sandasa's quarters like some predatory cat taking a lazy moment. "Not that I'm doubting your senses, mind. It's just that poaching from other Weyrs is generally frowned upon."
Sandasa glared at her. It was Sandasa's only-one-cup glare, before she'd had enough coffee to mellow her mood. Jahena, however, was fearless, and merely smirked back.
"I realize it isn't my place to dictate how the other Weyrwomen run their Weyrs," Sandasa growled. "But this time I need to intervene, because Belandriel is letting her bias destroy something precious and she has no comprehension-"
"Tell me how you really feel."
Sandasa sighed, letting the interrupting barb slide. "Weyrwoman Belandriel has a good heart, but she is an elf. She has no grasp of time in the same urgency a human lifespan requires. Humans measure time in days. Elves measure time in centuries. And I know she is doing the best she can with what she was taught by her predecessor, doing better than her predecessor, but that does not mean I am going to stand back and watch her make a crippling mistake. Not when someone's life is on the line. Particularly not when that someone needs me especially."
Jahena chuckled. "Take me with you when you go. And the new one, Veridanza. She's your most politically competent junior and I'm your Weyrlingmaster. If nothing else, a small Queens' Wing sends a message. Plus, that Veridanza's a helluva speechmaker if needs must and I like making people squirm whether needs must or not."
"It's really not appropriate to ambush and bully Belandriel."
"Says you. You're the one pissed off at her. We're damn well going to go grab your protege-to-be whether Belandriel likes it or not. Some bullying may be required. And that's what you need me for. Because you're supposed to be nice, but I'm the wild animal barely on leash."
Instead of dignifying that with an answer, Sandasa closed her eyes and focused inward. She could reach and telepathically communicate with any Pern-blooded dragon and corresponding rider on all of Teragaia, but the truth was it was easier to talk to the closest dragons and more difficult at distance. And Aphadon Weyr was not close to Haven Weyr. Finally, however, Sandasa isolated the mental presence of Iearath, Belandriel's gold, and slid her mind along that link until she found Belandriel.
Weyrwoman Belandriel, Weyrwoman Sandasa. You have a young woman in your Weyr that I intend to annex into Haven Weyr.
If you are referring to Jessera, I must respectfully decline, Belandriel returned. As a blooded Pernese who can hear all dragons, she is invaluable to-
You mistake me for negotiating. I will be arriving at Aphadon Weyr later today with one junior queen and my Weyrlingmaster.
Sandasa snapped the communication link before Belandriel could reply, though she could feel the stung outrage all the way across the continent. She opened her eyes to see Jahena grinning wolfishly.
"She ain't happy, aye?"
"You could say that. I'm going to need more coffee before we go. Get Veridanza briefed and ready, give Kalynath the recognition image."
Welcome to Sunder, Jessera! Time to recruit.
