The Botanist's Guide to Teragaia
or, The Weird and Wacky Plants We Play With
What is the Botanist's Guide?
The Botanist's Guide is a guide to all the strange, unique, and possibly useful plants found on Teragaia. More broadly, it's the first of what I hope will be a series of collaborative world-building exercises. The Guide is meant to be a community effort to expand our knowledge of Teragaian flora. If a plant is listed here, it's something your character could potentially trip over out in the wild, or have growing in their garden, or be treated with in the weyr's infirmary. It's also your opportunity to contribute a permanent piece to the lore of Teragaia!
What can be added to the Botanist's Guide?
If it's flora, it's fair game! Real-world plants, plants from preexisting fictional worlds, and completely original plants are all welcome here. Get as weird and out-there as you like.
Who can add to the Botanist's Guide?
Anyone! So long as you're a member of the site, you're welcome to add as many entries to the Guide as you'd like.
How do I add to the Botanist's Guide?
Start by reading through preexisting entries. Once you're sure no one else has already claimed the plant you've got in mind, write it up! After you've written up your plant's descriptive, post it in this thread. I'll add it to the table of contents as soon as I can.
What should my entry look like?
There are five main parts to an entry.
Are there rewards for adding to the Guide?
Absolutely. For every three entries you submit to the Guide, you'll be awarded 5 BP. As time goes on and the guide grows, I may hand out some more unique rewards to contributors too! You never know what we sneaky admin types will do.

There are five main parts to an entry.
- Appearance is where you tell us what your entry looks like. Is it a bush covered in tinsel? Is it a tree that grows in the shape of a toucan? A mushroom that walks around on fifteen legs? Tell us about it! This is also the place to describe a plant's lifespan, growth patterns, flowers and so on. If you've got a picture of your plant, put it here.
- Habitat is where your plant lives. Does it float in mid-air? Only grow on ancient battlefields? Appear for five minutes every Tuesday? Anything goes!
- Uses are what your plant is good for. Maybe its leaves can be crushed and made into a poultice. Perhaps its heartwood makes excellent wand cores. Or it might just be a really pretty bush to use in landscaping. Not every plant has to have a use, be it medical or otherwise.
- Warnings are anything we might need to know if we run into your plant. Does it try to mind-control anyone who looks at it too long? Are lots of people allergic to it? Can eating too much of it make you ill?
- Origin is where your plant came from. Is it Pernese? Originally from Earth? Or is it something native to Teragaia?
