It was a relief when Necthan agreed to aid him, and Dominic led him to the old cabin he'd been living in. It had been cleaned, but there were key things missing: the place wasn't lit, though there were a few lamps lying around (probably left behind by the last owner). "I've been having trouble generating my own power," the zombie teen explained. "I had hoped the water wheel would help, but..." he trailed off, shaking his head. He had checked it out, and the wood was rotting away. He would need to build a new one or find some alternative. "You have any idea what to do?" he then asked, looking back up at the giant changeling.
Nec looked around and the sparse cabin. At least the building itself seemed solid. "First you should get a fire going. You're not gonna get electricity any time soon and it might be a cold night." The lamps looked to be oil at first glance, a hint that the place had never actually seen electricity before.
"I'd say forget electricity as of yet and focus on the important things. Warmth, food and shelter. And honestly, I haven't seen anyone with power that didn't live in the weyr... I guess the village has it, but I never thought to ask." He gave Dominic a scrutinizing look." Never been in your own in... I guess 'the wild'? I could still take you to the village, we might make it before dark."
Dominic nodded. "Right, I can do that." He had remembered to stock up on firewood since he had used it yesterday to heat the cabin, and he didn't hesitate to go over to the old fireplace and put some wood in, though he looked up at Necthan. "I can go hunting but I don't know where to get dairy or fruit," he admitted. "Not without money, anyway. The only money I have probably wouldn't even work here." Kimasa chittered gently at their Bonded, and the others that had stayed behind fluttered down to join the rest of their family. "I had to go to a boarding shchool for the magical or mythical before being brought here. I didn't really need to worry about much..." Talking about the boarding school brought back memories of Zinnia, it always did, but he knew she was strong even though it hurt for them to be apart.
Nec checked out the lamps and got them lit while Dominic fixed the fireplace. Looking outside it was already darker, so the village would probably have to wait.
Money had never really occurred to Nec. Or rather, currency. He hadn't had any when he arrived, but made what he needed by hunting and selling. Usually it was coins of different metals, but he'd also seen trading, paper money, IOUs... "It might. Whatever you have, there's a lot of different ways to pay here. Still not sure how the conversion between currencies work, though. You'd have to go to the village for it. Not much fruit or cows out here."
Dominic then lit the wood, the fire spreading after the zombie had thrown in some scrap paper for kindling. "Do you have anywhere to be?" he inquired of the changeling.
Though the light of the oil lamps wasn't much compared to electricity-powered ones, the glow of the Kimasa family provided enough light for the two of them to see in the darkness...or for Dominic to see anyway, considering he didn't have night vision unlike some of the undead creatures that he had formerly gone to school with. At least there was some hope that he could use his money or get it converted to whatever sort of currency they had here. Maybe groceries wouldn't be so hard to come by.
Being what he was, Nec had no problem seeing in the dark, but the light was still welcome.
He shrugged at Dominic's question. "Not officially. I travel a lot, so I just sleep wherever I find a nice spot. Should probably get a place though, I've been using the Shamrock when I'm in town so far. Or Raf's library on occasion." Wandering over to the fireplace he leaned back against the mantle. "Possibly weird question, but what kind of world are you from?"
Dominic listened quietly as Necthan spoke. He wasn't familiar with the Shamrock himself, or the library considering he'd never been to either of those places but the library would be a nice place to read at the very least. Upon being asked what sort of world he came from, he gave a half shrug. "One where decent people are few and far between," he replied. "People with demonic or zombie heritage are looked down on by everyone. I only had one friend where I came from, but..." He shook his head. In a way, he was happier here though of course he missed Zinnia. Maybe she would be lucky enough to find her way here, like he had.
"Rough. But I doubt you gotta worry about that here. I mean, I know there's been a war against zombies here, but I think that was pretty long ago. Just saying, you might catch some surprised looks but I think people will be polite. If not I'll just tell them to be."
Catching the look as Dominic thought about home, Nec could at least guess at the zombie's thoughts." Hard leaving people behind" he observed quietly.
To have someone willing to say that they wouldn't hesitate to stand up for him was something new; no one aside from Zinnia had ever done that. Sure, the zombie knew that Kimasa and Sugar Cookie would, and they were his closest friends right now. "Can I call you a friend, then?" he asked, not wanting to seem as though he was rushing things but he was curious as to how far Necthan was willing to build a relationship with a zombie. He didn't mind if they remained acquaintances though. At the question, he nodded. "Zinnia. More human than demon, but that didn't matter back where I came from."
"Only if I can do the same." He gave Dominic a wink and a smile. He didn't need to worry about who or what Nec would consider friends. Most of the time his only condition was the 'candidate' not trying to kill him, and even then there were exceptions! In fact, one of he few he counted as family back home had started as friend, then tried to kill him, saved his life and then after a few months slowly turned family.
"My little brother was half demon. He's still back home though. Just hope he's still alive...".
Dominic smiled slightly and nodded in response, finding himself relaxing a little in Necthan's presence. "You can take the bed, we'll take the couch," he said softly, wanting to make sure that their guest was comfortable and the bed was rather large whereas the only couch available was more of a loveseat and likely wouldn't be very comfortable for the large changeling. "Your little brother?" he inquired, tilting his head. He wouldn't mind learning more about the changeling's sibling, but he was struggling to keep his eyes open.
"Mm." He nodded and smiled, but it was a sad one. He didn't know why he'd mentioned Will because it hurt just thinking about it, but apparently he had.
"Maybe tomorrow." Shaking it off, Nec looked at the couch. Yeah, it was barely more than half his height, but he didn't like taking the bed either, that just felt wrong when it was Dominic's home. "You can barely keep your eyes up, go to bed. I'll take the couch, I not tired anyway."
Dominic's smile fell slightly at the sadness he could see on Necthan's face. "I'm here if you want to talk. We've both left invaluable people behind," he murmured, before shaking his head slightly in response. "I'm fine. You take the bed, you'll be more comfortable there than here." Kimasa flickered reassuringly at the changeling, even though he couldn't understand them like their bonded could. It was all right with them as well; they weren't picky as long as they could remain with their bonded.
He chuckled at the offer. "Not much of a talker, but thanks. Maybe later. I'm a better listener than talker to be honest." Shooting Dominic away from the couch, Nec sat down, making himself as big as he could. "And don't make me pick you up and put you to bed, cuz I will. I told you, I'm not sleepy but you're basically asleep on your feet." He crossed his arms and nodded at the bed with a smirk.
Dominic would have pouted but that would have been childlike, and though he might be young he had dealt with enough that he wasn't as innocent as he used to be. He frowned at Necthan but accepted that he wasn't going to win this battle since he knew the changeling could very well follow up on his 'threat' of picking him up and carrying him to bed, stifling a yawn as he went. Kimasa chittered at Necthan and flickered a few times. The offer is still open, the eldest child answered.
