Prison cells. Lovely. Phiarlan had an image of a cell-like... box for lack of a better word from Cobalt, an early day in her life. So needless to say he had a pretty low opinion of them. Spying in the dim, flickering light he saw the opening, and it's seemingly-inert guardian. But he was a flit born and bred as it were on Teragaia, and he well knew the antics of the IF.
Case in point, this place! Even the most harmless of things could be far from such.
The black mottle was just musing over what to do when through the gap he spied movement – another of his kind! Not his rank, but hey, clearly something alive in here even if he could barely see more than a dark form with recognizable features like wings and a long neck, due to the sudden bright flashlight. Regardless, Phiarlan was of the mind that perhaps this other might know more about this place. They had to get on the same side of the bars, though, and clearly the other was hesitant to cross that gate.
Well, no worries for a Firelizard, now that he was thinking clearly again. He couldn't get out of the building – he was finding his mental imagery of Cobalt, of his home in the dojo or anywhere else he was familiar with was far too fuzzy to make it safely – he could see through the bars and the gap quite clearly. Carefully the black mottle crouched down, eyes watching not the (he didn't know it at the time) brown Firelizard but the space behind her and to one side.

Pip felt a wave of relief, anticipation and anxiety roll through him as the laundry cart kicked off - in any other circumstances he would have had a blast on the ride, but even the usually carefree Sphinx could tell that whatever he’d stumbled into here was no laughing matter. After the doors swung open, he poked his head out of the cart, his eyes lighting up as they landed on the Lepicerin - surely, this had to be the one he was looking for?
“*Hey, little buddy!*” he called out telepathically, more grateful than ever for his mindspeech as he jumped out of the cart. “*Don’t be scared, I’m here to get you outta here!*” Of course, that was easier said than done, a shiver making his tail twitch as he watched the tiny creature’s movements slow under the glare of the eye. Cautiously, he crept closer to the box they had taken shelter under, keeping low to the ground. “*I know this probably sounds crazy, but - I need you to trust me. If you can climb up here on my back, maybe I can fly you out? I can take you somewhere safe where there’s food and real shelter - no more cages. My owner is kind, I know she’ll look after you - she saved me from a fate maybe as bad as this place. Let me do the same for you.*” He wasn’t quite sure in the dingy surroundings if the other creature could see him, but he extended a wing anyway; if they could grab it and climb onto his back before the eye got them, maybe the two of them would be able to make it out?
The other fire lizard stumbled back, seemingly surprised by the other's sudden disappearance. It was at this same time that the lightbulb burst, sending the place into darkness, and the formerly inert mannequin began to move. It started forward, but just as Phiarlan made his reappearance, it reached out and seized him around the neck, squeezing tightly enough to leave marks and effectively choking him. But luckily Phiarlan wasn't alone - the brown twisted his flashlight so that it was right in the mannequin's...well, the mask that passed for its face, and the thing's grip slackened just enough for Phiarlan to get free. Keeping the flashlight trained on the mannequin, the brown moved closer and glanced briefly at the black mottle, eyes whirling with concern.
He didn't have anything that could possibly tend to the other's injury, but what was important was that they made for the gap on the other side, the one that the mannequin had been guarding. There was no way it would be able to fit through there, so they should theoretically be safe for the moment.
The brown motioned for the older fire lizard to move ahead while he kept the flashlight directed at the mannequin, slowly backing towards the gap himself. He didn't want to risk turning his head too soon because it was clear that, just like everything else he had faced up to this point, these mannequins had the ability to hurt and even kill. He didn't even want to imagine who or what had made them, but given his luck the two of them probably would...
~~~~~~~~~~~~
The little Lepicerin fixed him with a glare...well, as much as a rabbit could glare, anyway, before their eyes darted to the eye. You dummy? Eye catch if see, they practically hissed. No windows, can't fly. Die if move, eye too fast. There was also too much that could be knocked over and immediately draw its attention. Unless the big creature was somehow strong enough to break through the roof, and Scarf seriously doubted that he was, then there was no way out.
The eye turned its gaze towards them again, and Pip's wing would suddenly feel heavy. His feathers would begin to gray and solidify, rather quickly beginning to turn to stone and if he didn't retract his wing he might never be able to fly again. Scarf, easily figuring this out, made a frustrated sound before leaping at Pip with all of their might, though they wouldn't be able to do more beyond making him stumble back. Stupid move from big dummy. Want lose wing? they asked, more than a hint of sarcasm in their mindvoice. I not know better, say you want die. At least now they were out from behind the box, but now they were back to square one. How they were going to get out, they didn't know. At least Pip's wing was rapidly turning back to its normal colorful sheen now that it was no longer subjected to the stare of the eye, so that was something. You have plan? the little Lepicerin asked, though they didn't sound like they were too excited by the fact that they would have to rely on someone else.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, it's certainly a good thing that Pip and Phiarlan are at least accompanied by those with a good grasp of how things work around here! Maybe it will make escaping easier?
Pip, round five - He's found who he was looking for, but now it would probably be in their best interests to get out. What's the game plan? Will they be retracing their steps, making an escape route of their own, trying to get around the eye's petrifying glare? You decide!
Phiarlan, during those few moments Between certainly hadn't seen the mannequin move.
Though when he came out and was summarily seized by the neck, well. It certainly had his attention. Thankfully the black firelizard's few moments of alarmed flailing combined with the slackened grasp caused by the flashlight's beam earned him his freedom.
As Phiarlan landed beside the brown he coughed a couple of times, trying to clear his throat and ease his breathing. He had a bit of a wheeze, but nodded that he was alright enough to continue and making a note of the flashlight's effect on the thing.
Light, huh? Interesting. Definitely something to note, and he would be certain to keep an alert eye out for another light source of some kind to use. Perhaps that was a clue, as well.
For now, however, the gap was definitely the location to go. With his new companion guarding his back Phiarlan carefully moved towards the opening, eyes searching for any signs of movement and taking slow, silent breaths through his nose to try and pick up the scent of fresh air, or anything that might give a clue. The gap was smaller, large enough for them, but maybe it would be not only safety, but a way out or failing that to answers.
Moving through the dark hallways with only his fellow fire lizard's flashlight as a guide, Phiarlan would make the unfortunate discovery that there were even more mannequins than the one that had been guarding the gap between the door. His companion seemed anxious, spinning around to try and catch every single one of them in the flashlight's beam, but none of them seemed able or willing to move.
For now.
It might have been funny if the situation wasn't so dire, the way that the young brown kept trying to focus his flashlight on the unmoving mannequins, but the fear that whirled in his eyes made the situation all too real. If they were to survive long enough to make it out alive, his caution was more than warranted.
And then the pair came to a room absolutely filled with the things.
The younger fire lizard jerked his head towards the other side of the room as the mannequins began to converge upon them, moving at a speed faster than one might have thought possible. Their movements were jerky but quick and it was all that the brown could do to keep all of them in the beam though for every one that moved three more approached - they had to move quickly if they wanted to get out of here, though the young fire lizard seemed determined to guard Phiarlan's back.

Pip couldn’t help but feel a little wounded by the little rabbit’s lack of gratitude for his rescue efforts, though he would swiftly be distracted by the sudden stiffening of his wing. His eyes widened in horror as he watched his beautiful feathers turn to dull, heavy stone; he may even have yelped out loud and doomed them both were it not for the Lepicerin colliding with him and making him stumble back, just barely in the nick of time.
*Holy moly, that was close! Sorry…and thank you for saving big dummy*, he added, his ears flattening a little as he dipped his head apologetically in the little rabbit’s direction. *Plan, plan, yes, there’s gotta be one of those around here somewhere…* His eyes darted around the room, surveying the scene as he racked his brain. Flying was out, and it didn’t seem like he could confound the eye with riddles, but maybe there was another way… *That peeper can’t look everywhere at once, right? Well, what if we drew its eye elsewhere - some kinda big, loud noise to divert its attention, and then you could run past while it’s looking elsewhere!* he suggested, looking at the Lepicerin hopeful for any hint that he may yet redeem himself in their unimpressed eyes. *Does that sound crazy enough to work, or just plain crazy?* As for what might provide such a distraction, though - well, there was the box, or indeed Pip himself was rather skilled at being loud and distracting. That might increase the rabbit’s chances of making it out alive…though they might be alone.
Phiarlan was certain both in his element and out of his element at the same time. The shadows, the darkness, those were areas where he excelled.
Spooky mannequins that came to life and nearly strangled him? Yeah... no.
Thankfully his fellow flit seemed to have some better understanding of what was going on and had that handy flashlight, which was keeping further aggressions at bay for the moment. That might be the breathing room they'd need.
That was his thinking until they came to a room that was utterly full of the things.
The Black Mottle hissed in frustration as he crouched, studying the monsters' approach though there was no rhyme or reason to it he could see and for all his thinking he couldn't figure out a way to bring more light, though that was certainly what they needed. But he couldn't even breathe fire, lacking any recently-chewed firestone.
Well, when the going got tough, the tough...
-ran away as fast as they could!
Hoping to catch some of the mannequins off-guard Phiarlan thought an image of quick movement and the pair moving close on one another's tails, then shot off directly at one of the approaching mannequins, aiming first low to the ground, then as the flashlight flipped that direction as the younger flit hopefully turned to follow went up, looking to bound over that one's head and take to the air to look for a way out!
The Lepicerin seemed about to respond with something along the lines of how dumb that idea was...but then they stopped to think about it. The eye couldn't reach the very corner of the room, so if Pip tried to climb the boxes and go around the top, then maybe they would be able to slip past it. Though they couldn't see it from their position, there was also a partially broken window at the top, just large enough for a smaller sphinx to squeeze through if he was careful around the broken glass. Not bad idea. Maybe big dummy not so dumb. Can go back, climb boxes. Eye not reach that far. Go around from top, cause big noise on opposite side. Will move. Then go back to other side, make more big noise.
Alternatively, if Pip discovered the window, he might be able to take the little rabbit with him and make an escape. If they stayed here too long while making a decision, however, they would run the risk of that creepy fellow in a wheelchair finding them and doing who knows what - provided the eyes wouldn't turn him to stone. But, considering that he likely traveled this place on a daily basis, that might not be a problem for him.
With a little nudge from Scarf and the eye finally moving back to the other side where some kind of lift was stationed, Pip would be left to make his move. But would he take the rabbit with him, or would he stick to the plan to be the distraction so that the two of them might be able to slip through the door that had been left slightly ajar on the other side? That was up to him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The brown flit squawked in alarm, nearly dropping the flashlight, but he pounced on Phiarlan nonetheless before he could try something so risky. The two of them wound up rolling underneath a bed where the mannequins couldn't quite reach them, shaking his head vehemently as his eyes flashed worry and fear and concern. That act could have gotten him killed. He turned his head to shine his flashlight on a door on the other side before looking back at Phiarlan, hoping to convey the message that they should head in that direction. It was locked and the mannequins couldn't climb, so if they headed that way then they should be safe...theoretically, anyway.
With the plan hopefully being communicated to the older flit, the brown fire lizard slowly made his way out from underneath the bed, his flashlight trained on the mannequins. He would probably wind up dizzy from all of this spinning around to keep them all locked in the flashlight's beam for even just a moment, but it was a risk he was willing to take if it meant they could reach the door. He could only hope that neither of them happened to get caught in the process.
Using his tail to beckon Phiarlan out from under the bed, he hoped that the other wasn't too angry with him for pouncing on him earlier and was still willing to go along with him. It was far too dangerous around here to try separating.
If the brown Firelizard squeaked in alarm, then it was a small sound compared to Phiarlan's sharp squawk-snarl as he was pounced and the pair tumbled beneath the bed. Granted, it was probably the safest place for their little back-and-forth. The ebony flit's eyes were whirling with both anger and surprise, for all that the images and impressions he received made sense he still felt his plan was reasonable.
But, he consoled himself as they untangled and prepared for another attempt, the brown one, while younger, had been here longer and had clearly learned things he had not known before their meeting, namely the flashlight trick to stop the mannequins from moving. Perhaps there was yet more that the black didn't know that had he in advance would've made him see that his actions would've been a bad idea. Time had been against them from the moment they'd met, so it made sense that there hadn't been a moment to spare or a safe enough place to risk a divided attention to clarify further.
Still, though, it only quieted his anger a bit, enough so that he didn't resist following the other's lead. AS he followed Phiarlan couldn't help but scowl; they really did need to find another flashlight, or something just as good. He followed though, hissing at ones that twitched wrong and keeping his eyes open for one that might be sneaking up on them unawares, chattering out a warning if they were getting too close.
Perhaps in the next room, if there was time, he'd ask for greater explanation, and offer to take control of the flashlight for a bit. Even to him it would be a heavy burden so it must be becoming wearying to the brown.
Luckily for the pair of them, they managed to make it to the door. The younger brown flicked his tail towards the door to gesture for Phiarlan to go ahead while they kept their flashlight trained on the mannequins who were still frozen in place by the beam. Every now and then one of them would twitch, however, and the flashlight's batteries wouldn't keep forever. It had already begun to dim and there was no telling what would happen...well, grievous injury, perhaps. The younger was already very close to the door so if he dropped the flashlight and made a break for it then he should be able to make it. That he was willing to sacrifice his own safety in order for Phiarlan to get out first, though, was telling.
Should Phiarlan take the opportunity to hurry into the next room, there would be what looked like a cracked door...one that led outside, if the breeze emanating from it was any indication. It carried the fresh scent of rainfall, but getting wet was probably far better than getting injured. The flashlight was beginning to sputter though, on its last metaphorical legs. The brown shook it a little but in that instant the mannequins all began to move forwards as though they knew that the flashlight wouldn't last much longer either. But the brown quickly directed it back towards them and they froze once again. The batteries were dying - and so would they if they didn't hurry.
Phiarlan hissed softly when he realized the flashlight's batteries were going out. Just what they needed. He did hurry forward, chittering at the brown to follow close behind, then sent a flash of imagery that he saw a door and a potential way out!
Glancing back he realized however that his companion through all this was about to be in a very, very bad situation. It was time for a quick, decisive move and to take a risk.
The black shot forward on feathered wings for the door, fighting to get it open as quickly as he possibly could. Yes, there might be rainfall going on outside, but even so unless it was nighttime there would be some kind of light, and maybe even dim it would be enough to back those blasted mannequins up!
The brown nearly dropped his flashlight at the image of a door - a door leading outside, no less - and he moved backwards as quickly as he could, his gaze flicking between Phiarlan and the mannequins that took another step closer as the flashlight sputtered. Right on cue, though, the door swung open under Phiarlan's insistent battering and a beam of sunlight just so happened to shine right through the door, allowing the two fire lizards a few feet worth of wiggle room. The brown fire lizard dropped the flashlight and darted towards the open door, but rather than in the rainy city, Phiarlan would find himself - and his brown companion - back where he'd started before he'd passed through the door. And a good thing, too, no doubt Cobalt was probably worried sick.
Phiarlan all but squawked in surprise, finding them not only safely away from the mannequins and outside but back where he started. The black rustled his feathered wings, giving a small snort in irritation. Well, at the very least it seemed like that trial was over.
Looking at the brown he nodded his head, indicating for the other to follow him. If nothing else Cobalt, whom he gave a mental image of, could help the brown find his way home.
The younger brown fire lizard looked around, seeming wary, but Phiarlan at least was familiar so it was the black mottle who he stuck close to. When they finally reached Cobalt, it didn't take long for him to realize that he could either leave and fend for himself again...or he could stick with the black mottle. Needless to say, his decision was made pretty quickly. He didn't want to be alone again. It might have been selfish of him, but there was something to be said for there being safety in numbers.
Stuck In The Dark But I'm Your Flashlight Female Nebulae Astrum has gone wild!
Solely For My Own Survival Nonbinary Pygmy Lepicerin Scarf has gone wild!
Cobalt couldn't show it, but she was actually quite nervous with how long Phiarlan had been gone. Which meant that she was equally pleased when he returned... with a new friend.
Well, she might not be the most warm creature to cuddle up to, but Light, as Cobalt would decide to name him much in the Warforged style, would find for himself a loyal unit and family to be a part of. And Cobalt wasn't the sort to ever abandon one a unit-mate, ever.
((This is such a great bonded for Cobalt! Light will help her learn more to be emotional and experience it in trying to see to his needs. Thank you, Shy!))
