General Information
Melodears are living stuffed animals, often winged. They come in every size, shape, and color. Rumored to have been created by a lonely young child who was highly skilled in magic, they are naturally drawn to those who need them. This has been noted to not only include children, but also teenagers and adults in need of comfort and companionship. It's also not uncommon for the smaller sorts to hide out in toy stores amidst stuffed animals that they resemble, or to pose as the only one left on a shelf. Melodears are also capable of adapting to their bonded's needs; forexample a Melodear who has a bonded that suffers from chronic headaches might sew pockets to themself to carry medication and earplugs while a Melodear who's bonded to someone deaf will be able to utilize mindspeech, and a Melodear who has a bonded with diabetes will be able to sense when their blood sugar's dipping too low or getting too high and act accordingly. They make excellent companions for the sickly for this reason.
Another trait unique to Melodears is that they have to sing rather than speaking. To be more specific, they have normal speaking patterns but they have to sing things out instead of using normal speech. When harmed, they are capable of sewing themselves back up but will require extra stuffing if any has been lost in order to fully heal. Thankfully, they don't seem to feel any pain from being harmed as they are plush animals and injuries are treated as more of a temporary inconvenience than anything else.
Mating Information
Companionship is naturally a big deal to the Melodears, and it's often said that they have hearts too big for just one love. Polycules are quite common among these creatures and the criteria by which a partner or partners are chosen varies widely. During Chases, a Melodear will often demonstrate their ability to create a cozy, comforting space for those they are interested in and they can sit and sing with each other for as long as a few hours to as short as a few minutes depending on how well they click. As Melodears don't usually ascribe to any gender in particular regardless of appearance nor are they capable of giving birth, new Melodears are brought about one of two ways. The first method is giving a spark of life to another stuffed animal or animals, whereupon they will become new Melodears and be adopted by their new parents. The second way is far more time-consuming, but for Melodears looking for their child or children to resemble each one of them to some degree they can sew a baby from scratch given the materials and stuffing to do so. "Clutches" can range anywhere from 1-5 new Melodears on average, though there are times when new parents can get a bit carried away.
Bonding Information
Melodears are simple creatures, and they don't tend to make it clear that they are present. They prefer quieter, low-key methods of bonding which is why they'll often choose to just hide themselves among other toys in the hopes that they will be picked up by someone who will love them and name them. If someone sees a toy sitting on a shelf where there weren't any before, or an extra stuffed animal with wings while the others nearby don't have any, it's highly likely that the toy in question is a Melodear. Bondings can take place in pretty much any place that has an abundance of stuffed animals, from abandoned homes, daycares, and theme parks to toy stores and garage sales.
Naming Information
Melodears have no preference in terms of name, regardless of how silly or ill-fitting it might sound as they consider the names their chosen bondeds give them to be proof of the love they have extended one another.
Ranks
Extra Large
5*
Easily the largest and strongest of the species at anywhere from five and a half to six feet on average, Extra Large Melodears love carrying their bondeds around and are the only rank with the ability to actually adjust their height to up to twelve feet in order to better serve as both steed and guardian. Quadrupedal Melodears will ferry their bondeds around on their backs while bipedal Melodears will carry theirs in their arms, piggyback-style, or on their shoulders. They are not quite as independent as some of the other ranks as they like knowing where their person is and that they are safe wherever they are going. Extra Large Melodears have been known to develop separation anxiety if forced to be away from their bonded for an extended period of time, but they strive to be as helpful as possible and don't so much as flinch when it comes to bending over backwards to ensure their bonded feels cared for regardless of how able-bodied (or not) they might be. An Extra Large Melodear will prefer to have at most four children in a clutch on average, but it's not unusual for them to adopt as many as a dozen or more.
Large
4*
Standing roughly between four feet to five feet tall, Large Melodears definitely live up to their name. While they can be carried, they'll often prefer walking or flying alongside their bonded while holding their hand and are usually relatively easygoing and slow to action. However, what Large Melodears have that the other ranks lack is the ability to actually consume food and drink offered to them. This makes them splendid guests for tea parties and picnics, and they enjoy being dressed up in costumes as well. They are also very gentle with those smaller than them, making excellent caretakers for babies while the parents are away. They can even make meals on their own, provided that they are able to reach any utensils, food, and dishware they might need to prepare it (those without wings may well need to get creative by pulling over a chair). While it can be difficult for those without separate individual digits, they can usually figure out some kind of workaround. A Large Melodear will prefer to have anywhere from two to seven children in a clutch.
Medium
3*
With a height ranging between two feet to just under four feet tall, Medium Melodears enjoy being carried as much as they enjoy walking or flying alongside their bondeds. They can sometimes be a bit more eccentric than other ranks, but their creativity knows no bounds. They are always eager to try new things, especially food, even despite not needing it to survive. Medium Melodears tend to have rather unusual forms as this rank can vary from bright pink dragons to fluffy black moth creatures with big red eyes and everything in between. Regardless of their appearances, Medium Melodears are the sole rank that does not need to sleep though it is hard to say whether it was something that evolved over time or if it had always been inherent to their specific type. A Medium Melodear's eyes are also capable of glowing in the dark, though it is a trait that has been known to spook their bondeds just as much as it does would-be intruders. A Medium Melodear prefers to have three to five children in a clutch.
Small
2*
Ranging from between six inches to one and a half feet tall, Small Melodears can easily be carried in their bonded's arms or sitting on shoulders. They have the lowest energy of the bunch and are very much content to snuggle with their person and read a book together rather than running or flying all over the place like the Petite Melodears. They're good at spotting things out of place and they dislike pranks that are intended to harm or frighten others. Anyone who has bonded with a Small Melodear is certainly familiar with a Small's mastery of the Disappointed Look, and rumors have circulated that said look can cause even the biggest of dragons to look away in shame and guilt for whatever they did wrong. It is also believed that the Disappointed Look came about due to not being taken seriously when they gave scolding lectures due to both their size and the fact that Melodears cannot help but sing their words. After a Chase, Small Melodears will usually prefer to have two to four children in a clutch.
Petite
1*
Just like their rank name implies, the Petite Melodears are the smallest of their kind at anywhere between one and four inches. They often come with an attached loop so they can be hooked onto keychains, though they're equally amenable to being tucked into pockets or into purses as long as they can still peek out and survey the area. Despite their size, Petites are easily some of the most protective of the Melodear and will quickly alert their bonded if they spot something or someone they think might be dangerous coming their way. While they like being close to their bonded, however, they dislike being babied or treated as lesser due to their size. They are also the most active of the Melodears despite getting tired out easily, always excited to go somewhere new. Thanks to their small size, they're also quite skilled at finding lost things and have been known to dive under couches and chairs to retrieve spare change or a set of keys. They will usually prefer to have one or two children per clutch.
